Czechia’s Mighty Chimney-mounted Water Towers – UPDATED

While studying the water towers (vodárenské věže) of Czechia (formerly Czech Republic) an impressive collection of water towers built as a part of industrial chimneys was identified. Images of the 17 remaining historical sentinels (of the original 28) are provided below along with a brief background history. The tremendous resource for the data and images contained within this post is the www.vezovevodojemy.cz website.

Map showing locations of 17 remaining chimney water towers – Created with google.mymaps.com

Two (2) of these chimneys have been beautifully maintained or restored, as depicted in the first few images below. Hopefully, in time, the other towers can be cared for so they are preserved for future generations to marvel.

Peace/Mír!

*Updated the post in the evening of 5/28/26 to add Ostrava-Svinov.

**Updated the post on 5/28/26 to add Prague-Vysočany and Přelouč.

***Updated the post on 6/1/26 to add five towers to the list.

Chimneys against this evening's sunset in Glasgow.

The iconic #chimneys of the National Palace of Sintra, a medieval royal residence in Portugal, used by the Moorish Taifa of Lisbon from 1022–1034, and later in the 12th century, by the Portuguese after the reconquest. It became a favorite residence with the royals and remained occupied up until the 19th century and the end of the monarchy. It's architecture is a blend of Gothic, Manueline, Moorish, and Mudéjar styles.
