A Venerable and Time-Tested Guide | Los Angeles Review of Books

Peter B. Kaufman reviews the 18th edition of “The Chicago Manual of Style.”

Los Angeles Review of Books
I'm finally doing it; this spring I'm finally reading the entire 1,144-page #ChicagoManualOfStyle from cover to cover, in its gigantic paper version, which I bought last year because I learned I could deduct it from my taxes. Why? Because it's one of the four most important technical manuals a #bookEditor like me can memorize, along with the Associated Press (AP) stylebook, the Modern Language Association (MLA) stylebook, and the Bluebook for legal citations. GET READY FOR A LOT OF NERD SHIT

I got me a freshly minted copy of the 8th edition of the #ChicagoManualOfStyle. Among other significant changes, Chicago no longer requires a place of publication when citing books published since 1900 (see 14.30).

You may rejoice or mourn accordingly (Rom 12:15).

#CMOS18 (18th edition of the #ChicagoManualOfStyle) is coming soon to #PerfectIt. Meanwhile, here's a blog post by #analytical #linguist Chris Ryder on how that works behind the scenes & what PerfectIt will now be able to find that is based on CMOS18. https://tinyurl.com/34har34c #AmEditing

I'm such an iconoclast.

Yes, CMoS says there are no spaces on either side of dashes (en, em, hyphen).

BUT.

When a writer has put spaces there, and that writer is consistent in the styling, why do I need to change it "because CMoS says so?" I'm not paid to follow CMoS. I use it as a guide, yes, but . . .

We indies can make our own rules, and one of mine is "pick one and be consistent."

PSA: Chicago Manual of Style needs to get over itself. It's too long, difficult to navigate, and thematically inconsistent. Yet it wants you to believe it's your friend.

CMOS is not your friend.
