Putin names the Stalin-era chief of police academy

In the context of a long and regular Kremlin campaign to rehabilitate Stalin, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the renaming of the Security Services Academy (FSB) in honor of Felix Dzerzhinsky, founder and first director of the infamous Cheka, the Soviet secret police. “Considering the exceptional contribution of F.E. Dzerzhinsky to the security of the State,” is the justification read in Putin’s decree. It is the first time the Kremlin leader – also a former student of the FSB Academy – has publicly expressed such a positive judgment on the personality of “Iron Felix,” a symbol figure of repression during the Soviet era, the architect of the Red Terror that followed the 1917 Revolution.

The FSB today considers itself the heir of the Cheka.

The predecessor of the FSB Academy, the Superior School of the KGB of the USSR, bore Dzerzhinsky’s name until 1992, when the Soviet Union no longer existed. Putin has expressed regret only a few times regarding the removal in 1991 from Lubyanka Square in Moscow, headquarters of the KGB and then the FSB, of the Dzerzhinsky monument; the statue of Iron Felix was placed ‘in repose’ in a garden of other monuments of the Soviet era, near the famous Gorky Park in the capital and now it is feared that it will soon return to its original location.

The Communist Party of the Russian Federation has repeatedly called for the return of Dzerzhinsky to Lubyanka. The idea would be to remove from the square the Solovetsky Stone, the monument erected in memory of the victims of political repression in the USSR, and to bring back the statue of the founder of the secret police, one of the perpetrators of those killings. The rebirth of the Dzerzhinsky FSB Academy "is an important symbolic event, which offers a clear picture of the ideals of the most powerful people in Russia,” notes independent Russian journalist Farida Rustamova.

#Bolshevik forces attacked ~26 #anarchist centres in Moscow on #ThisDayInHistory in 1918. At least 40 were killed by #Cheka secret police & 500 arrested. After subsequent attacks, #LeonTrotsky said: "At last the Soviet government, with an iron broom, has rid Russia of Anarchism".

Today In Labor History March 27, 1918: The Cheka (Soviet secret police) tried to arrest the clown duo Bim-Bom for satirizing the Communist regime. The audience initially thought it was part of the act until they heard live shots being fired at the clowns as they fled. The clowns were later questioned, but released. And afterward, refrained from satirizing the government. They had been active since 1891 and continued up until World War II. They used unusual objects as musical instruments, like frying pans, brooms, saws. Prior to the Communist Revolution, they routinely satirized the Czar. For this, they were often censored or banned from events. They also performed throughout Europe, in Berlin, Budapest, Paris and Prague. In one of their satires of the Bolsheviks, Bim brought out framed portraits of Trotsky and Lenin. Bom asked what he was going to do with them. He replied, “I’ll hang one, and put the other against the wall.”

The #Cheka was founded on #ThisDayInHistory in 1917. The #SovietUnion's first #SecretPolice, & a core #DeepState element, put the lie to many of #Lenin's claims about the #Marxist elimination of the state. Any so-called #TransitionalState with such powers will never give them up.
Early tension turned to full-fledged betrayal by #RedArmy at #Lenin & #Trotsky's order on #ThisDayInHistory in 1920. A #Makhnovist delegation was sent to Moscow and shot, and hundreds of #anarchists in #Ukraine were arrested, including all members of #Nabat the #Cheka could find.

"I want everyone to sing in farewell, learn at least ten meaningful songs and sing them in unison to extinguish the sorrow with native singing" - #Iryna_Tsybukh

During her lifetime, "#Cheka" left the wishes of her relatives as to how her farewell ceremony should look like.

While escorting the paramedic on her last journey , the #Ukrainians fulfilled her request.

"Instead of flowers, donate to the battalion and help the families of the victims. No artificial flowers or plastic. Clothes - embroidered or camouflage"- this was the wish of "#Cheka."

Eternal memory and sincere condolences to family and friends.
