National Hurricane Center BotNHC has completed its post-analysis and Tropical Cyclone Report for Tropical Storm #Chantal (July 4-7, 2025). Chantal was the only tropical cyclone to make landfall in the United States last year, moving inland over northeastern SC. Chantal was responsible for 6 direct fatalities in NC, mostly from freshwater flooding. A park ranger and student? volunteer? passed behind me and I got to talk to them a bit - they mentioned this was the first controlled burn in that part of the park they've done (it's been closed off since #chantal giving park staff a rare opportunity to do this without impacting visitors)
He mentioned he was looking forward to see how the forest responds.

This seems inordinately early. I really hope this isn't some sort of omen for how hot it's going to get this year.
(This is wooded river land that was flooded by #chantal which scraped off quite a bit of soil - and maybe that helps account for the early start)
#chaosaussiesauce and I got out to #eno state park today for the first hike of the year. It was the first time we've been that the upper part of the Holden Mill trail wasn't blocked off since tropical storm #chantal closed the park last July.
We got a weeeee bit off the upper trail - because I haven't seen this fellow since last June, a young pine tree growing directly out of one of the more interesting outcrops along the river.
