Many years ago, I have come to believe that "resistance to change" does not even exist: This spurned several BetaCodex research papers, including the one on #ChangeAsFlipping, and ultimately the #OpenSpaceBeta approach to transformation.

We also learned that "Resistance" is a reaction to an inappropriate stance on change by those trying to advance the change. We have come to call that flawed approach at change work "Fixation on Acceptance"

To get unstuck, first renounce that obsession with acceptance

The overwhelming share of change efforts in organizations is doomed right from the start. The problem is not people

In organizational change & development, a pretty simple principle applies:
"Working the system is worthwhile,
working the people isn't."
A #BetaCodex white paper on the matter: https://betacodex.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/BetaCodex-ChangeAsFlipping.pdf

@gnaddrig
Basically, I am saying that if you do NOT distinguish between a #system and a system's #culture, then "culture" becomes a chicken-and-egg problem. A myth. A curse. A god. Which it is not.

Culture is merely the shadow of a system. No more. No less.

I have written about this in my books #EssaysOnBetaVol1 and #OrganizeForComplexity.

If culture actually "governed" systems, then culture would be a curse.

Which is illogical, of course.

There is no "large-scale change"!
Doesn't exist. Never existed. It's just a mirage.

What exists instead are two modes of change: Working IN the System (optimization) and Working ON the System (overcoming a system). For the latter, employ the wonderfully effective #ChangeAsFlipping: https://betacodex.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/BetaCodex-ChangeAsFlipping.pdf

In 2019, the #BetaCodex Network published two important research papers about #change & #transformation:
Paper 15: Secrets of Very Fast Organizational Transformation https://betacodex.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/BetaCodex-SecretsOfVFOT.pdf and
Paper 16: From Now to New, Right Here: Change-as Flipping
https://betacodex.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/BetaCodex-ChangeAsFlipping.pdf

The two papers outline key concepts and theory behind the #OpenSpaceBeta approach, developed the previous year. They also mark a new era in #OrganizationalDevelopment: Away from planned change and #ChangeManagement, and towards "change work done together with all the willing". Both papers were written by our associates @silkehermann and @nielspflaeging.

OpenSpace Beta is going to celebrate its 5th anniversary in June! Nothing more fitting, on that occasion, to remember that #OpenSpaceBeta-based transformation has been undertaken by quite a few companies already. Here is the testimonial of @tporath, an entrepreneur that @silkehermann and @nielspflaeging accompanied during his company's #transformation, which happened in the middle of the COVID pandemic, and for the whole company at once, with teams in 3 countries. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsn5_Ccd5yw

@jchyip
Exactly. Which is why #changemanagement is wrong.
The good news: It is also obsolete and has been so for a few years. A better way:
#VFOT, or #VeryFastOrganizationalTransformation. It's a much more #conservative approach to change work!

Stuff that is part of the nature of command & control organization:s:
- Assign blame
- Praise heroes!
- Instill fear in everyone
- Sow divisive myths
- Appraise and judge people
- Incentivize and punish!
- Use judgmental/divisive language

All this is destructive, with regards to value creation, innovation, performance and competitiveness.

The antidote: Make #organizationaldevelopment development a topic of serious conversation. Here is how and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XkrhhNhSVM
