On 11 June 2001, Sparklehorse released their third and penultimate album, It's a Wonderful Life.

Leaving the solemn production on his rural Virginia farm of its predecessors behind, Mark Linkous played with a full band while recording, including guest musicians like PJ Harvey and Tom Waits.

With a sobered-up mind and "other people's brains and input involved", it became his masterpiece.

On 6 June 1996, Glasgow's Belle and Sebastian's debut album, Tigermilk, was released.

"The city was smaller and less self-conscious than London, and crucially, its musicians supported each other. There was no hierarchy, no gatekeeping.

Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai) would later describe Belle and Sebastian as "the most dangerous band in the world." He meant it as a compliment."
