“If the monarchy had won”: from tomorrow in bookstores, the essay that rewrites 1946

AGI - Tomorrow, Marco Patricelli’s new, gripping book, “If the Monarchy Had Won. June 2, 1946. A Counterfactual History,” (published by Solferino) will be released in all bookstores.

We all know how it went in reality: on June 10, 1946, the Court of Cassation announced the victory of the Republic over the Monarchy by two million votes. But eighty years after that historical moment, this essay completely reverses the perspective with a documented narrative and a relentless pace.

The Secret Operation “White Cross”

In the book, the author hypothesizes the defeat of the republicans due to a secret intervention by the United States and Great Britain. Concerned by a possible leftward drift of Italy and distrustful of the leaders of the CLN – particularly Palmiro Togliatti, seen as Stalin’s right-hand man – the Allies decide to move in the shadows.

Through the halls of power in Rome, Washington, London, and Moscow, we discover the backstories of Operation “White Cross” (White Cross, from the symbol of the Savoia family). To ensure the victory of the monarchy and keep it under control, the Americans and the British organized the vote of prisoners of war in the camps, promising a quick return home, and also encouraged the vote in Trentino.

The Fork in the Road That Changed Italy

The same Umberto of Savoy, initially perplexed, decides to give the go-ahead for the operation via his minister Falcone Lucifero after seeing the strong support obtained by the left-wing parties in the local elections of spring 1946.

From that precise moment, the history of Italy takes a completely different turn… An indispensable book for lovers of history and those “what if” scenarios, available in bookstores from tomorrow.

The heat is tiring Sinner in Paris. Jannik defeated in 5 sets by Cerundolo after a collapse.

Jannik Sinner is out of the 2026 Roland Garros. The world number one went down in five sets against Argentinian Juan Manuel Cerundolo after complaining of discomfort, likely related to the heat, and stomach problems during the match against the South American.

Sinner was unwell at the end of the third set.

The South Tyrolean was leading 6-3 6-2 5-1 when he started to feel unwell. The Italian returned to the changing room to have his blood pressure measured, but from there Cerundolo overturned everything, winning the third set 7-5 and taking the match to a fifth set after dominating the fourth (6-1).

Sinner’s collapse in the deciding set.

In the last set, Sinner proved to be short of energy and was forced to concede 3-6 2-6 7-5 6-1 6-1, after three hours and 31 minutes of play, thus postponing the closure of his Career Grand Slam to the next season.

Sinner’s losing streak ends.

The losing streak of the 24-year-old from Sesto, who is not defending 1300 points from the lost final against Carlos Alcaraz, ends. The Italian will restart with 13,500 points in the ATP ranking and a lead of 3540 points on Alcaraz.

Sinner will return to the field at Wimbledon to defend the title.

Announced absence at the ATP 500 in Halle, Sinner will return to the field directly at Wimbledon, where he will be called to defend the title won in 2025. Juan Manuel Cerundolo advances to the third round, who will face the winner of the match between Martin Landaluce and Vit Kopriva.

Socialist Sanchez embroiled in scandals. Here's how the criminal trial works in Spain.

Government and Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party officials have been embroiled in a series of judicial scandals that are consolidating Prime Minister Sanchez’s government. The opposition is demanding a return to a vote, while even Sumar’s allies are pressing the PSOE, deeming the explanations given yesterday by the prime minister from Rome, following an inspection by Civil Guard agents at the headquarters in calle de Ferraz, “insufficient.” To understand what is happening in the courts, it is necessary to explain how the criminal process works in Spain, which has some differences compared to the Italian legal system and is defined as “mixed,” because it combines inquisitorial elements in the investigative phase with accusatory guarantees in the trial (which, like in Italy, include the presumption of innocence, the right to technical defense, the obligation to have the assistance of a lawyer from the moment of arrest or investigation, the right not to incriminate oneself, the right to an impartial third judge, the principle of contradiction, and the right to a trial without undue delays). The total typical duration for a criminal trial that passes through the first instance and an appeal generally ranges between 2 and 3 years, although “fast trials” (juicios rápidos, used for example for minor crimes or domestic violence) conclude in much shorter times, in the order of a few weeks or months. Here is what the three phases that make up the criminal trial consist of:

Phase de Instrucción (the investigation)
It serves to gather evidence and identify the perpetrators. Unlike other legal systems, the investigation is headed by an independent judge (Juez de Instrucción) and not by the Public Prosecutor (Ministerio Fiscal). The judge decides whether to close the case for lack of evidence or to send the accused to trial (Auto de procesamiento). The duration varies depending on the complexity; for ordinary trials it can take from 6 to 18 months.

Fase de Juicio Oral (the trial or hearing)
It is the public phase in which the accusation is discussed before a judge or a court (and in more serious cases, with the presence of a popular jury). A Spanish peculiarity is the possibility of having multiple accusers in addition to the Public Prosecutor. There is the private accusation (the victim, acusación particular) and even the popular accusation (acusación popular), which allows citizens or entities to appear as civil parties to protect public interest (and this is the case – for example – of the right-wing trade union Manos Limpias, supported also by the People’s Party and Vox, in the trial that sees David Sanchez, the prime minister’s brother, on trial for influence peddling and abuse of office). During the trial, the prosecution and the defense present their arguments, examine witnesses and present evidence. The accused has the right to defend themselves, to be assisted by a lawyer and to exercise the right not to answer. It concludes with a judgment by the judge or verdict by the jury, which can be acquittal or condemnation. It should be remembered that the judge presiding over the trial (the trial judge) must be completely neutral and detached from the collection of evidence (which in Spain is carried out by the Juez de Instrucción).

Impugnazioni e Gradi di Giudizio
Both parties (the prosecution and the defense) can appeal the verdict. The first-instance judgment can be appealed before the Provincial Court (Audiencia Provincial) or the Supreme Court of Justice (depending on the crime). Finally, it is possible to file a petition for review with the Tribunal Supremo (Tribunal Supremo) for issues of legitimacy.

From Sinner to Sabalenka, why the tennis big names are protesting at Roland Garros

ATP - At least 20 players, including the top-ranked players Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, are planning to reduce their media commitments tomorrow at the Roland-Garros as a protest against what they consider an unfair distribution of revenues from the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments. This is what is learned from a source close to the players.

At least seven members of the top ten male players and seven members of the top ten female players would join the protest: they have been asking for 22% of the revenues from the four Grand Slam tournaments for over a year, compared to the current 15%.

The idea - according to the same source - would be to limit media appearances to just 15 minutes.

The Matches

Jannik Sinner’s adventure at Roland-Garros will begin with local wildcard Clement Tabur. Having completed the Career Golden Masters at the Italian Open, the world number one is aiming to win the last Slam missing from his trophy cabinet. On the clay courts of Paris, where he reached the final a year ago, missing three match points before yielding to Carlos Alcaraz, the 24-year-old from South Tyrol is the overwhelming favorite and, with the absence of the defending champion – who will also miss the grass season – no one seems able to hinder him.

After Tabur, Sinner would then find himself in the second round with either Fearnley or Cerundolo, a possible derby in the eighth round with Luciano Darderi (who himself will debut against Ofner), then a quarter-final with Ben Shelton and a possible semi-final with Felix Auger-Aliassime or Daniil Medvedev.

In Sinner’s quarter-final are also Matteo Berrettini and Matteo Arnaldi, who will respectively face Marton Fucsovics and Tallon Griekspoor: the Roman tennis player in projection could face Darderi in the third round, for the 25-year-old from San Remo hypothetical second round with Tsitsipas or Muller and third with Shelton. Flavio Cobolli, debuting with a qualifier, is in the second quarter of the table and in the eighth round could clash with Medvedev.

Musetti beyond the pain: defeats Cerundolo and reaches the eighth round of the Internazionali.

Lorenzo Musetti overcomes pain and Francisco Cerundolo, becoming the first Italian to reach the eighth round of the Internazionali di Roma. The Carrara-born tennis player defeated the Argentine in two sets with a score of 7-6 6-4 after a very tight match characterized by constant breaks and counter-breaks in the first set, which was only closed in the thirteenth game. However, the Italian had to overcome a muscle problem in his left leg, visibly wrapped, which caused him no small amount of trouble. Indeed, after the match point, he burst into tears.

“Physically I wasn’t in good shape, the audience helped me a lot – he confessed – I particularly care to win here.” He then explained: “For me, matches like these count more than those in which everything goes my way: what I’ve always lacked is winning when I don’t play my best tennis, I’m not in the best physical and mental condition. These are victories that I hope can turn over a season.”

If that’s the case, it will be clear already in the eighth round, where Musetti will face Casper Ruud, fresh off a victory against Jiri Lehecka in just 79 minutes. It took the Italian 2 hours and 12 minutes to bend Cerundolo’s resistance, in a match between two clay court specialists. Not a spectacle, to be said. The match was characterized by several errors, on both sides. But “Muso’s” tenacity was enough to reach the eighth round of Rome for the fourth time in his career.

Waiting for the face-off with Ruud, Musetti found his first victory of the season on clay against a Top 30 of the ATP ranking, the result of greater quality and cleverness in exploiting the negative moments of the Argentine, making his greater experience pay off with clarity.

Miami Open, Sinner reaches semi-final

ATP - Jannik Sinner defeats American Frances Tiafoe and advances to the semi-final at the Miami Masters 1000. The Italian defeated his opponent in the quarter-final in two sets with a double 6-2 in one hour and 12 minutes of play. He will now face the winner of the quarter-final match between Cerundolo and Zverev.

“For me, continuing to be hungry for victories is quite natural – said Sinner, who is now leading Tiafoe 5-1 –. Today I started well, immediately a break and this is very important: because when the others play in a more aggressive way, I remain compact. I served well, I played solid tennis and this makes me satisfied.”

The Secret to Good Results
Following his victory in Indian Wells, Sinner revealed the secret of this winning streak that is continuing in Miami: “I am calm both on and off the court, because I have played a lot in the last three or four weeks, between matches and training. This is the last tournament on hard court before the break towards clay, I’m happy to have returned at least to the semi-final.”
