Here's a Tunga Rere, the huhu beetle, NZ's largest native beetle species.
I'd forgotten I'd taken this photo and just found it in my backlog and popped it on iNaturalist (and Flickr).
They're fantastically chunky beetles.
Tiger Longicorn beetle (Aridaeus thoracicus)! Found in the summer months, the black banding is supposed to make it look like a wasp, so other animals leave it alone – nobody picks a fight with a wasp when there's easier food around!
