Miami‑Dade County saw its population shrink for the second year in a row, falling by 10,115 residents between July 2024 and July 2025 to a total of 2,802,029 – the third‑largest county‑wide decline in the United States that year, behind only Pinellas County, Florida, and Los Angeles County, California. The drop reflects the county’s continued position as the seventh‑largest in the nation and the largest in Florida, yet it is now losing more people than it gains.

The Census Bureau attributes the loss chiefly to a steep decline in international migration at a time when U.S. immigration policies have become more restrictive. Domestic out‑migration also accelerated: more than 72,000 people moved out of Miami‑Dade between July 2024 and July 2025, making the county the top net domestic loser among Florida’s counties. Residents cite worsening traffic, unaffordable housing, and inadequate public transit as key drivers, while former Mayor Francis Suarez’s 2020 “How can I help?” tweet appears to have drawn only the wealthy and tech‑oriented, not the average citizen.

Even as ordinary residents depart, a wave of billionaires and high‑profile executives continues to relocate to South Florida, snapping up property and establishing businesses. Recent arrivals include Palantir CEO Alex Karp, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and Google co‑founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. The juxtaposition highlights a growing divide: while Miami‑Dade loses tens of thousands of everyday residents, it simultaneously attracts some of the nation’s most affluent individuals.
