Construction on a high-voltage subsea cable between France and Ireland, able to carry enough power for 450,000 homes, with the aim of boosting energy security and helping to reduce bills, began on Monday.
The ‘Celtic Interconnector’ is due to be completed in 2026 and should be connected to the grid by 2027.
Once completed, the 700-megawatt cable will run between Ireland’s south coast and France’s north coast.
My pleasure, Monsieur. Vive La France ! #CelticInterconnector brings us closer to our nearest neighbours now in #EU . @EirGrid rolling it along ! 👏
RT @vincentguerend: C O R K. Very glad to meet again @SeanKellyMEP. Munster and Europe are a fantastic success story, as illustrated also by the #CelticInterconnector 🇨🇵🇪🇺🇮🇪

France and Ireland have confirmed that the Celtic Interconnector will be up-and-running in 2027.
Construction of the 575 kilometre-long connection linking Brittany to Cork will start in 2023. The €1.623 billion cable will have a transmission capacity of 700 megawatts.
Creating better links across the European continent the Celtic Interconnector will enable Ireland to export electricity from its offshore wind farms.
Enormously proud to have contributed to the #CelticInterconnector #infrastructure project via our work for EirGrid and Mott MacDonald, which saw us complete the #archaeology and #Cultural #Heritage Chapter of the #Environmental Impact Assessment Report! The archaeology images show Lisglasheen Ring Fort, County Cork, now best seen by remote sensing technologies!
