There is a Game Gear cartridge of Castle of Illusion; except the game runs in Master System mode (i.e. just like with the SMS cartridge adapter, with the Game Gear doing the resolution scaling), to simplify the port.

So, I really don't like platformer games and only played this because it's Mickey rescuing Minnie, but from someone that doesn't like the genre, it was a very nice-looking and mostly well-done game and I appreciate I could relatively easily complete it without collecting everything. 😅
IshambardRight, Disney. Mickey Mouse. Why were games around your mascot so frustratingly difficult in the 90s? This isn't just a #CastleOfIllusion thing. We had Magical Quest, #MickeyMania , I mean World of Illusion wasn't too difficult from memory... But still! That's a lot of Retro Gaming trauma you dumped on us in that generation!
Castle of Illusion is meaner than it has any right to be. Behind that cute facade is a game that is just a little cruel. From enemy placements and patterns to slightly squiffy hit boxes. Also, you need to hold down the D-pad to prepare Mickey's butt to jump on and defeat enemies. That's a weird nuance and very much a choice that is seldom implemented into a 2D platformer.
Is the game good? It's pretty decent, and offers a challenge, but I have beaten it now and I don't see myself rushing back do that all over again!
So I can officially put two more games from my childhood to rest. This time on the good ol' #SegaGenesis or #SegaMegaDrive as I knew it.
The games in question being #RobocopVsTerminator and #CastleOfIllusion I'll go into these games in more detail in separate posts. But man, these games were not easy rides, to say the least.
Growing up, I had access to both Sega and Nintendo consoles as an old friend of mine had a Megadrive whilst I had the SNES. Typically, we would play the arcade co-op games like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe.
On the rare occasion, we would take turns playing a myriad of single-player games, but these two definitely struck a chord with me when I was a kid.
