A cruise ship has run aground off Monuriki Island, in the Malolo archipelago of Fiji, the paradise where Tom Hanks was shipwrecked in the 2000 film “Cast Away.” The Australian ABC reports this.
The Blue Lagoon Cruises Fiji Princess, on a seven-day cruise, struck a coral reef on Saturday and became stranded. The ship’s thirty passengers and thirty crew members, aboard the 55-meter vessel, were evacuated and transported to Port Denarau, but rescuers are working to prevent fuel from spilling from the tanks and causing a natural disaster in the crystal-clear waters of the bay.

Structural Damage and Environmental Risk
As reported by the Fiji Sun, the Fiji Maritime Safety Authority (FMSA) has stated that initial inspections confirmed serious damage to the ship’s port-side rear, including the steering gear area, as well as damage to the lower part of the hull. The ship has also suffered an engine failure and, reportedly, began taking on water following the grounding.
