Two popular beers from the 1970s, Carling Black Label and Double Diamond, are returning to UK shelves. This follows a trend of bringing back old brands, while some new ones like Overtone Brewing Co. have closed.

Carling Black Label and Double Diamond Beers Return to UK Shelves After Decades

Nostalgic beer brands like Carling Black Label and Double Diamond are back in UK supermarkets and pubs. Find out why and what it means for drinkers.

I #listened to an episode of the #OldTimeRadio show Challenge of Space – complete with four commercials for the sponsor, #CarlingBlackLabel beer, the lusty beer for real men – while cutting vegetables today. “Where Was Atlantis?” (ZA 1969-12-22) begins in the International Space Research Center in New Mexico, when Commander Robin Salwell is asked the titular question by General Corder.

This leads to a discussion about the #AncientCivilization, and civilian archeologist (pro-tem Lieutenant) Alan Martin is introduced. An ancient map has come to light, showing three circular features with a ridge passing through, and a single peak at the edge of the group. A spot on Mars has identical geography, and #Atlantis is (non-coincidentally?) the name of the location. Other papers unearthed suggest that Atlanteans possessed knowledge of anti-gravity.

This is enough for Corder to authorize a small expedition to Atlantis on Mars for “a practical engineering and space-travel exercise” that will cause the General some trouble if things don’t work out. Then we cut with foreboding music to the spacecraft arriving “all those weeks” later at a parking orbit over Atlantis¹, with the Scottish captain (a small bit of internationalism for the ISRC) thinking that their mission to measure gravity in the area will come to naught.

Cmdr Salwell lands the descent module, then he and Lt Martin go out briefly and see little of note. Shortly afterward they have to retreat to the base ship for 48 hours to sit out a sandstorm. When they emerge, they find the storm has uncovered a wall. Approaching, they find a largely collapsed monolithic building, still mostly buried, and a plaza with markings which suggest a launching area to Salwell. Martin then has an idea, which… well, that would be telling. I found the program worth its half-hour. ●●●◐○

[1] The real Atlantis Chaos on Mars is around 35° south latitude; you can only do a parking orbit over a feature at the equator. But at least it was a fast trip.
