The Australian states of Victoria and Tasmania are trying out a fare-free transit period to reduce fuel consumption.

I'm interested to see future data how much this drives up regional bus and train usage during this oil shock. Will people who don't usually take transit try it out, then continue using it if they like it? We'll see, in any case, Canadian agencies should take note of the results.

Early this morning RNZ Morning Report was discussing the big demand for EVs as petrol prices surge. They asked people to send their opinions so I did! I was really pleased they read mine out with a positive comment attached. People don’t always think about taking that further step away from cars altogether. I know it’s not possible for everyone but many people could do it.

Here’s what I said:

I once considered replacing my ICE car with an EV, but then decided to try going carfree and walk, cycle or bus everywhere. More than 5 years later I remain happily free of all the hassles of car ownership!
