After breakfast at the W, we visited Santa Maria Maggiore and two more basilicas before spending the afternoon at the Capitoline Museums. We then visited two more churches on the way to dinner.

Santa Maria Maggiore and the Capitoline Hill

After breakfast at the W, we visited the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. After, we visited the Basilicas of San Silvestro in Capite and Santa Maria in Aracoeli before spending the afternoon at the Capitoline Museums. We then walked over to a restaurant by the Circus Maximus and below the Palatine for dinner, visiting two more churches on the way.

Die Piazza del Campidoglio in Rom hat mich tief beeindruckt. Entworfen von Michelangelo, strahlt dieser Platz eine besondere Harmonie aus, die Geschichte und Kunst perfekt vereint. Der Blick auf die Reiterstatue von Kaiser Mark Aurel in der Mitte verstärkte mein Gefühl, an einem Ort von großer politischer und kultureller Bedeutung zu stehen.

The Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome deeply impressed me. Designed by Michelangelo, this square exudes a unique harmony, perfectly blending history and art. Standing before the equestrian statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the center, I felt a strong sense of being in a place of great political and cultural significance.

These two #ancient #roman #statues of river gods were moved to the #campidoglio ( #capitolinehill) when it was remodelled by #Michelangelo. Originally they sat in the #pediment of a #temple. One god rests on a #sphinx and represents the Nile, the other originally on a tiger to represent the river Tigris. But this animal was recarved (badly) to resemble a wolf and the twins add to symbolise #Romulus, Remus and the river #tiber
