“Red Rock Sunset” — Sunset light on red rock formations near Fruita, Capitol Reef National Park.

This spot is obviously full of spectacular scenery, though it was a bit tricky to photograph near sunset. One of the “problems” actually turned out to be a plus. There was some overcast that muted the light, but the light was still strong enough to be softly directional, especially on the more distant cliffs. A second issue is geological. The area is on an inclined formation that rises to the west, so the sun actually drops behind the uplifted western horizon a bit earlier than true sunset…continues: https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/11/29/red-rock-sunset/

Capitol Reef National Park Aerial

I love exploring the Southwest from a plane. The colors and patterns offer a way different view than from on land.

It took me a while to realize

"Road To Capitol Reef"
I got to Capitol Reef just after a little winter storm went through. There were just traces of snow on the ground and the clouds were clearing. Lots of shadows as the clouds were rapidly moving past. I do love a good "open road" shot. Feels very freeing.

Capitol Reef National Park, Utah🇺🇸

#Utah #Vacation Day 6 at #CapitolReefNationalPark hiking the Grand Wash trail. This is an easy 2 mile each way walk with dramatic canyon walls looming overhead. We parked along Highway 24 and was grateful for the morning shadows which made for comfortable going. Each bend in the canyon brought stunning new formations into view. There was limited access to the remainder of the park as Scenic Drive is closed for construction. (but we knew that ahead of time) After eating lunch at the picnic area, we enjoyed a small cherry pie at Gifford Homestead. Made a short stop at Panorama Point but clouds and spotty showers dulled the vibrant colors of the landscape. Oh well, more reason to return again one day. #GetOutside #Canyon #Desert
