@silkester No, that's not what's happening, that's not how EU accession works. And no, Canada is not joining the EU as a member state. If Canada wants to be a "fax democracy" like Norway (pays into the EU budget, but has no veto over EU law and EU decisions) then sure, go for it. Though I'll note that currently, most local Canadian businesses would not survive a week in the EU Single Market. Bulgaria and Sweden trade with less barriers between them than Manitoba and Québec do.

#CanadaJar

@LillyHerself @adamvs1 @eunews So is our new accession pitch: "Come in, we'll re-colonise you?" Should we try it on Angola or Morocco next? To any lovely Canadians reading: it's not you, it's us. I don't mind you not knowing how the EU works and what being an actual 🇪🇺 member is. I mind my fellow EUropeans not knowing, my beef is with them, not you. I would however caution against getting your 🇪🇺 info from journalists whose readership had to google: "What is the EU?" the morning after.

#CanadaJar

@eunews No, it can't and wouldn't want to. Since when does The Guardian get to have a say about membership of the EU anyway? Do Le Monde or Kathimerini regularly publish editorials about who will or won't join ASEAN or the AMU?
Mind your own business.

@Damax @notjustbikes So relaxing to read a conversation on this topic that's not brutally ignorant about what the EU is and the value of EU citizenship, nor swallowing the bait of The Econ*mist troll who started the *membership* meme. OK, both EEA and EFTA are goverend by EU law and overseen by the ECJ/Comm/EU courts and regulators and Canada still doesn't have an internal single market *between its provinces*, but at least those are actual Just Trade Agreements. So no #CanadaJar for this one. 😄

@iuculano *sigh* It's not a semi-serious debate. It's not serious and it's not a debate. But it's good that grifting in the attention economy brings to the surface MEPs like Streit. I like it when they wear their clown shoes to the office, it helps to identify which ones should be muted on any EU matters from now on.

#CanadaJar

@asmodai It mostly shows how little EUropeans value the EU or know what their EU citizenship actually means (Canadians are excused, they don't need to know any of this).

#CanadaJar

#CanadaJar

@dm *deep sigh* *throws 1 euro in #CanadaJar *
No. We should not do any of those things. Europeans who long so deeply for the ersatz anglo because they don't know how to exist as Europeans no longer under the tutelage of the Main Character on the Telly (and/or Instagram) are free to apply for a Canadian passport.

The rest of us who understand our Union is neither a mini UN nor a theme park with trade agreements will stay in Europe.

@heisinen *sigh* 💶🏺
Since "Europe" created Cameroon, Angola, Chad, Senegal, Algeria, etc. where's their invitation? #CanadaJar
