Lately I’ve noticed I mostly scroll. Even when I like something, I rarely comment. It feels performative or pointless.

I started wondering what it would feel like if a message arrived to me alone for a while. No likes. No audience. Just something I carry briefly and pass on.

I built a small experiment around that idea.

I’m genuinely curious — does anyone else feel that disconnect when interacting on social platforms?

Finally, signs of a real crackdown on dark-patterns. Banning kids from social and chat does nothing but allow platforms to continue exploiting Adults with dark-patterns. Its the dark-patterns that are the problem and what should actually be banned.

Commission preliminarily finds TikTok's addictive design in breach of the Digital Services Act

The European Commission preliminarily found TikTok in breach of the Digital Services Act for its addictive design.

Shaping Europe’s digital future

We’ve been thinking about authentication as something that should fade into the background once it’s set up.

Driftya now supports Passkeys and time-based 2FA, aiming to reduce risk without adding repeated decisions or unnecessary steps over time.

We also support SimpleLogin for people who prefer to keep their account separate from a permanent email identity.

Good security should be quiet. It should work, and then mostly disappear.

I’m very happy with my new Onyx Boox Go 7, a b/w e-reader I got for myself.

I can just start it, drop some ebooks onto it, and be on the go. So simple, just what a good tool should be.

Optionally, I could create a Boox account for easier syncing or log into the PlayStore to install apps – but only if I want to!

I never owned an e-reader, so will have to see how I’ll use it. But so far it feels very comfortable to read with and I hope to get back into the habit.

Evening at the lighthouse
Servers humming like a tide you trust.
Backups done, lights trimmed, no drama on the horizon.
Decentralisation isn’t noise, it’s cadence.
Slow systems. Clear ownership.
A light that stays on when the weather turns.

That’s why I run a private Forgejo git.

Same git. Same workflows.
Different posture.

No feeds. No behavioural harvesting.
Just version control that does what it says on the tin.

Email is plumbing.
Git is posture.

I’ve been spending time tightening the hidden parts of Driftya lately.

Not new features. Not visible changes.
Just making sure the foundation is solid.

Strong security headers, strict content policies, and defensive defaults so notes stay where they belong.

If a platform is about writing, it should also feel safe without asking for trust.

Clear sky.
Fishing fleet riding a calm sea.
The beam turns, steady as ever.
No drama. No storm.
Just quiet infrastructure doing its job.
That’s the thing about lighthouses.
They don’t shout. They operate.

Sysops note:
Learning happens in the gaps between design and cock-ups.
Root disk filled, Postgres did the right thing and refused to start, backups proved their worth, DB moved onto its own volume, system calmer than before.
Architecture improves fastest when reality gets a vote.
