So what is my pick for Anime of the Year?

There were 3 animes I rated 5/5 this year:

Kaiju No. 8 Second Season, Call of the Night Second Season, and Medalist.

Kaiju made the list for, if nothing else, its treatment of its middle-aged big-hearted dork of a protagonist. I love this guy and I appreciate how the show depicted his struggles. I think it was handled very well, which is an exceedingly rare thing. Kafka is just so very relatable.

Likewise for Call of the Night, I love Nazuna, and this season was very much her story like the first season was Kou's. And as always, the art is absolutely beautiful and in tune with the current mood.

Medalist meanwhile was something I originally dismissed as yet-another-sports-anime. But sports animes live and die by the strength of their characters, and boy is Medalist packed full of good ones. WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE HUG THIS GIRL? Which girl? ALL OF THEM. And maybe the boy too, even if he's kind of a jerk.

All three resonated with me emotionally, and it's naturally hard to pick one. But I think the gold medal has to go to... Medalist. Kafka is great and all, but the structure of Kaiju No. 8 means the story has to divert away from him sometimes, and often it falters when it does as many of the supporting characters aren't nearly so good. Medalist meanwhile is laser-focused on the adorable, indomitable Inori and the supporting cast are all great in their own right, especially Mike-chan, and Hikaru manages to be the perfect rival despite getting so little screentime.

Medalist, anime of the year!

Runners-up with 4.5 stars include Red Ranger isekai, Clevatess, May I Ask For One Final Thing? and Dandadan 2nd Season. All great shows, but lacking that connection to earn that last half star.

Call of the Night Season 2 is less about Nazuna's and Kou's relationship and more about Nazuna's past. Part of going into her past involves exploring her mother's relationship with one of the other vampires we already know.

My review of Call of the Night Season 2 was supposed to come out multiple weeks ago. However, I kept getting busy, so it took a while. Anyway, this season's OP was one of my top songs of the year. I love Mirage.

@apc #animangafoundit Call of the Night was always full of great imagery, but in the very first episode, Nazuna pushes Kou of a tall building. Of course she saves him, but this shared freefall is symbolic of Kou's plunge into a new, undiscovered world of vampires.
