Brown Pelican

I found this pelican down along the ocean in La Jolla in Southern California. The bird was nesting on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. He/she wasn't very far from where I was at but didn't seem to be worried about my presence.
The look in the pelicans eyes was mesmerizing as it looked up at me.

Brush Rabbits (Sylvilagus bachmani) have some clever tricks for staying safe. They can sit motionless for ages, but when danger strikes, they dart away in a zigzag at 20–25 mph.

In 2024, after over 15 years of thinking about it, I finally installed a kestrel nesting box on my Lassen County property—and to my delight, a male kestrel moved in this spring!

This image was taken after one of my video stakeouts. He emerged from the birdhouse and perched just long enough for a quick burst—this frame is my favorite.

Though I spotted a female with him in April, I haven't seen her lately. She might be incubating eggs… or maybe she moved on. Either way, the process has been amazing to witness.

Spring 2025: On a mission to capture Sandhill Cranes’ iconic mating dance, my wife and I headed to Honey Lake Wildlife Area. No dancers, but we spotted multiple pairs—including this one!

They weren’t too skittish but made sure I knew they saw me. Each time I moved closer, they “yelled” at me (definitely not songbirds!). After kneeling down, they relaxed again. This shot was right after one of those standoffs—just before they carried on as if I wasn’t there.

The male (I think) got extra animated, giving me this incredible wingspan display. A moment worth the trek.

Friends of Big Bear Valley Eagle cam!

(BB is one of the big mountains we can see in the mountain skyline from where we live, it is further east of where all the LA fires were.)

We’ve been watching Jackie and Shadow since the pandemic started and so far they’ve been unsuccessful. But this year there are THREE eggs, which raises the odds! Here’s hoping for eaglets in a few weeks…
