For the California gubernatorial primary this Tuesday, I had been favoring Katie Porter.

This quiz affirmed that, and now has me looking at Tony Thurmond.

This weekend, I'll likely use the site as a resource for deciding other votes too.

California veteran known for pro-Trump display outside his home dies after assault

A southern California man has died after an assault last week in front of his San Diego area home, which was well known for its extensive collection of US flags and signs supporting Donald Trump. Authorities confirmed on Monday that Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old US army veteran, died days after he was attacked on Wednesday outside his home in Escondido. Police have arrested Thomas Butler, a 32-year-old who media outlets have identified as a navy veteran, on multiple charges including attempted […]

California GOP candidates court Central Valley voters in final push before primary

In the final stretch before California’s primary election, Republican gubernatorial candidates Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco and former Fox News host Steve Hilton appeared together at a forum in Clovis to make their closing arguments to Central Valley voters. The event highlighted a largely civil tone between the two rivals, who have spent much of the campaign criticizing each other but focused their remarks on common political opponents, particularly Gov. Gavin Newsom and Democratic state leaders. Hilton, backed by a Donald Trump endorsement and leading in some polls, and Bianco both sought to position themselves as the strongest Republican contender capable of advancing through California’s top-two “jungle primary” system. Both candidates outlined broadly conservative agendas centered on public safety, water management, housing development, and regulatory rollback. They criticized state environmental and regulatory agencies and pledged to expand water storage infrastructure such as dams to support agriculture in the Central Valley. Bianco emphasized a tough-on-crime platform and vowed to overhaul parole and public safety institutions, while Hilton argued for reducing regulatory barriers to energy, housing, and water use. Despite occasional policy differences, both echoed concerns common among Central Valley voters, including perceptions of political neglect from coastal urban centers and frustrations over water policy and economic pressures. The forum, hosted by a local Republican women’s group, drew about 450 attendees and featured a dinner themed around presidential favorites. Attendees and speakers reflected strong conservative sentiment in the region, with Trump’s influence still prominent despite his low approval ratings statewide. Recent polling showed Hilton leading the race, followed closely by Democrat Xavier Becerra, with Bianco trailing. The event underscored both candidates’ efforts to consolidate Republican support while appealing to swing voters in a state that remains heavily Democratic.

apparently we have another national day of protest tomorrow, for voting rights, as is proper and everyone who can, should participate.

but, what does that mean? I can't; my remaining dog is still fighting for her life; as of yesterday I'm thinking she will win the battle, but I can neither bring her nor leave her home on her own to go protest.

at least I'm at the point where I can do other stuff than just watch her continuously. I even got some sleep last night, albeit with many interruptions.

I will take the time to deal with state bullshit, I think.
- my primary ballot is on the table, ignored. so are a lot of related mailers. I'll check the downballot races and figure it out so it can be mailed on time.
- this bullshit was boosted into my timeline: https://www.uscannenbergmedia.com/2026/05/11/al-jazeera-documentary-highlights-uscs-sale-of-dead-bodies-to-us-navy-israeli-military/ I'll draft a letter, send it to Newsom, possibly rest of UC Regents, and maybe others, if effective, to complain about the ethics violations.
- there are a couple or three bills in front of the CA legislature that my reps need to hear about. no i don't remember what. (I do remember the side effects of note for a good half dozen vet meds and canine chemo protocols.) fortunately, that's what bookmarks are for.

lastly, I'll remind my senators about my opinion on the SAVE act, in keeping with the theme.

anyhow, don't just do nothing, if you can't protest.

Where is the next Kevin Drum?

Kevin was instrumental in decoding California's complex and often duplicitous elections and ballot propositions. He also modeled honest and respectful debate, feeling like his online presence rose from holding his own as the lone progressive at many Orange County dinner parties.

There's a hole where he used to stand. Has anyone in California found someone new worth listening to?
