Cal State Faculty Begin Largest U.S. Strike of University Professors

Thousands of professors, lecturers and other academic staff members walked off the job in a protest that was expected to cancel most classes early in the academic period. They plan to strike for five days.

The New York Times

Welp, tomorrow is the first day of the Spring semester. And in about nine hours, members of my union (the California Faculty Association, which represents all faculty, librarians, counselors, and athletic coaches in the 23 campus CSU system ... a total of about 29,000 employees) go on a five-day strike (a.k.a., work stoppage) to protest management's failure to address requests/demands aimed at improving working conditions.

This will be the nation's largest ever strike of higher education employees.

During the strike, I'll spend some time walking the picket line and ignoring my work email and voice mail. The balance of the time will be spent studying for my Amateur Extra amateur radio license exam and playing Minecraft, I think.

When the #ChicoState chapter of the California Faculty Association (#CFA_United) goes on #strike this coming week (Jan 22-26), we'll be holding daily, noon-time "encuentros" (rallies), with open-mics to talk about #issues. A march/action will follow!

(Please post #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation plans at other campuses during the strike)

95% of the voting members of the #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation #union (representing the largest higher education system in the US) voted to authorize a #strike against #CalState. This is an amazing level of support for a work-stoppage. This vote illustrates just how fed-up workers are with the CSU administration & how we feel this is a critical moment to take action to defend public higher education in California. The US labor movement is on the move at the moment--and now we are too!

My employer, #ChicoState has released a report based on its "campus climate" survey. There's quite a few telling items in it, representative of widespread frustration across the #CaliforniaStateUniversity system, which has culminated in the collective bargaining stalemate with the #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation and administrators.

[Thread & graphs follows]

The survey was collected from April 27 through May 15, 2023, which resulted in a 41% response rate for faculty.
