Finished Skald: Against the Black Priory this week. Fantastic game. Really nails the dark fantasy vibe. I love a game where you start out feeling like a bottom of the barrel wretch, and grow into a proper hero.

Bregor went from scrounging for broken arrows and stealing food to being given the keys to the magical armory and facing down cosmic horrors beyond his comprehension.

Our 100th episode's part 2 will focus on 4 major games that were the first to be properly called "rogue-likes".

The first of which will be a deep dive on Moria! An open-source redesign of Rogue, you descend 50 levels to fight the all-powerful Balrog.

It pioneered the concept of a starting town, loot farming, and so much more!

Just to compare. Phantasie 1 used an 80x120 overland map. Here is the ascii version of the map.

The Ultima overland map was x4 and a bit more in size.

Animated gif of how the water tiles moved in Ultima 4 to simulate waves. Pretty cool for 1985.

I did not actually play much of the Ultima series. I did have Ultima 4 in the 80s, but I never completed it. I think it was just over my head at the time. I just wanted to bash monsters and collect gold.

A series I played far more than Ultima back then, was the Phantasie series. I can still hear (in my mind) the simple bleeps and bongs it made while moving through menu screens.

I was curious how the crpgaddict ranked them in comparison to Ultima IV, and he rated them lower, but all 3 phatnasie games got the same rating.

Pool of Radiance, 65
Ultima IV, 53
Phantasie III, 39
Phantasie II, 39
Phantasie I, 39

After he played 455 games, the Phantasie games come in around the 377 mark out of 455.

I still work on my javascript port of Richard Garriott's DND1
I think it is because it is small and easily decipherable and also, because it is missing things.
Sort of like Original D&D in a way, in that, it invites you to tinker with it.

The original basic code had no "line of sight" detection for bows shooting at monsters.

My first instinct was to write a triangle and get the angle. But then I thought, "How do I know if it passes through a particular square?"

Of course, it has already been solved, and it is called
