WIN! Double passes to excellent and intense film ‘Sound Of Falling’, in cinemas June 4

Cinema has the power to tell really fascinating stories and new film Sound Of Falling is one such remarkable one.

At different points throughout the last century, Alma, Erika, Angelika and Lenka each spend a part of their childhood on the same farm in northern Germany. The farmhouse bears witness to events both global and personal, with two world wars and a divided Germany providing historical backdrops to the girls’ more intimate experiences of growing up – innocent friendships, playful pranks, deep trauma and the burgeoning comprehension of life’s limitations for women under patriarchy.

Thanks to Transmission Films, Cream have 10 double passes to give away to Sound Of Falling, a film directed by Mascha Schilinski, opening nationally in cinemas on 4th June.

To try winning an in-season double pass, simply ensure you’re following our Facebook page here, and write ‘”I’m hearing it” in the Comments section for this competition (you’ll see it top of our Facebook page). Competition closes 5pm AWST, Friday 29th May with entries drawn on Monday and the film out later that week. Good luck!

How To Keep Your Garden Looking Healthy Year Round

A struggling garden is usually noticed before the cause behind it is understood. Brown patches appear suddenly and flowers stop blooming without warning. Leaves curl at the edges while grass begins looking tired, tired in a way that cannot be fixed with one afternoon of attention.

In places with warm weather, outdoor spaces are expected to stay attractive during every season. That pressure becomes obvious in areas like Apopka, Florida, where green yards are seen almost everywhere. A healthy garden often feels like part of the home itself and not just something sitting outside.

Gardens are imagined as peaceful spaces although constant upkeep is usually required. A one-more-day-wont-hurt thoughts-and-assumptions approach can create visible damage very quickly. Missed watering schedules, neglected soil, and hidden irrigation issues are often responsible for declining plants. Have certain corners of a yard ever seemed impossible to maintain no matter how much effort was made?

Healthy gardens are not built through luck alone. Consistent habits are needed and small details should be noticed early before larger problems are created.

Watering Habits Matter More Than Expected

Many garden problems are caused by watering mistakes although attention is often placed elsewhere. Plants are either flooded constantly or ignored for long periods. Both situations place stress on roots and visible damage is eventually created.

Watering schedules should be adjusted according to weather conditions and not routine alone. During rainy weeks, irrigation systems should not continue running automatically without supervision. Soil should also be checked directly because surface dryness can be misleading.

Sprinkler systems should be checked regularly as well. Leaks are often ignored until brown patches begin spreading across the yard. Although DIY fixes may seem tempting, irrigation problems are usually handled best by professionals. Homeowners should work with a reliable company that offers sprinkler repair in Apopka Florida because hidden system issues can quietly waste water while damaging plants at the same time.

Morning watering is usually preferred because moisture is absorbed before temperatures rise heavily. Evening watering can leave plants damp overnight which encourages fungal growth around roots and leaves.

For example, one yard may appear healthy from a distance although roots underneath are struggling badly. Another garden may recover quickly after simple irrigation adjustments are made. Small changes often produce noticeable improvements.

Would a garden remain healthy if watering habits changed randomly every week? Most plants respond best when consistency is maintained carefully.

Good Soil Is Doing Most Of The Work

Healthy soil supports everything happening above ground. When soil quality declines, plants begin struggling no matter how often they are watered. Nutrients are removed gradually and replacement becomes necessary.

Compost is commonly added because organic material improves soil structure naturally. Moisture retention is increased and roots are supported more effectively. Compacted soil should also be loosened carefully because airflow becomes restricted when ground remains too dense.

Several warning signs should never be ignored:

  • Water pools around plants after light rain
  • Grass develops uneven growth patterns
  • Leaves turn yellow despite regular watering
  • Weeds spread faster than healthy plants
  • Flower beds begin looking thin repeatedly

Mulch should be used thoughtfully around plants because moisture is preserved longer beneath it. Weed growth is reduced and roots are protected from sudden temperature changes. Too much mulch, however, can trap moisture excessively around stems.

Gardens Reflect Everyday Living

A garden often mirrors the routines inside the home connected to it. Busy schedules usually affect outdoor maintenance quickly while calmer routines are reflected through healthier spaces. In many ways, our lifestyle habits influence the way we design our homes and gardens are included within that pattern naturally.

Outdoor spaces are now expected to feel comfortable instead of purely decorative. Seating areas are expanded while low maintenance plants are chosen more frequently. Simpler garden designs are preferred because realistic upkeep matters more than appearance alone.

Families with children may prioritize open grassy areas while retirees often prefer shaded seating spaces. There is no single perfect garden because every household uses outdoor areas differently.

Modern homeowners also value practicality more than before. Native plants are commonly selected because they adapt more naturally to local conditions. Water usage is reduced and maintenance becomes easier to manage throughout changing seasons.

Gardens affect emotions quietly too. Neglected yards can create frustration while healthy outdoor spaces often encourage relaxation. A cared-for garden changes the atmosphere around an entire home.

Healthy Gardens Depend On Steady Attention

Perfect gardens are mostly seen in edited photographs and advertisements. Real gardens include dry patches, damaged leaves, and occasional setbacks. That reality should not feel discouraging because healthy outdoor spaces are built gradually.

Small habits usually create stronger results than dramatic weekend cleanups. Watering schedules should remain consistent and early signs of trouble should be addressed quickly. Plants communicate clearly through discoloration and unusual growth although those signals are often missed.

Gardening rewards patience more than perfection. Soil improves slowly and healthier roots develop through steady care. A garden does not need to look flawless to feel welcoming and alive.

Outdoor spaces should support relaxation and comfort instead of becoming constant sources of stress. When practical habits are followed consistently, healthier gardens are usually created naturally and maintained with far less frustration.

7 Genius Travel Hacks That Will Save You Time And Money

Packing for and planning a holiday can be one of the most exciting, and also one of the most stressful, times in your life. There are numerous things that you need to think about, and so many things to plan for, that you can often get to the airport thinking you’re all set, only to remember something you’ve forgotten, so you smack your head with your palm and think ‘oh no”. Perhaps it’s because you’ve forgotten to book travel insurance or neglected to get a neighbour to collect your mail, or maybe it’s something less vital but still important (like forgetting to pack socks!). No matter what it is, the bottom line is this: You need to be prepared for your holiday. If you’re not prepared you risk arriving at your serviced apartment in Melbourne or your Airbnb in Malaysia and thinking – damn – I don’t have my pyjamas! Let’s take a look at some of these genius travel hacks in the hopes that it helps you to save time and money the next time you travel.

Hack One – Make a great list
If you travel a lot for work, or if you’re always popping away on short jaunts and mini-breaks, you should make a list that’s comprehensive and covers every kind of season and weather type, and then keep it close. You can store it in your phone or laminate it and keep it in your room (if you’re more analogue) and then ensure that whatever is on that list goes into your bag – no questions asked!

Hack Two – Shop around for the best deals and bargains online
You would probably by now have heard of the online booking site Skyscanner and realised how incredible it is for finding cheap and awesome flights. You should use booking methods like this for your airfare and also shop around and compare flights as it’ll often give you the best deal possible. You’ll find that a bit of persistence really pays off here.

Hack Three – Keep a digital copy of your passport
This is a very easy one and can save you big time – all you need to do is keep a copy of your passport as a picture on your phone or computer (or even in the cloud, a la Google Drive) and then if anything does go wrong, which I’m sure it won’t – you have a copy of your passport on hand to refer to.

Hack Four – Be flexible with your travel arrangements
If you don’t mind getting bumped on a flight, it can mean that you might be upgraded to a higher class of fare on your next flight as a thank you from the airline. Be sure to make this clear on your check in!

Hack Five – Pack snacks
There is probably nothing worse than being caught on a long layover and realising that you don’t have any snacks available to feast on in between your transfit periods. Be smart on this one and be sure to stash a bag of nuts or chocolates in your bag to enjoy.

Hack Six – Pack an extra charge pod
There are few things worse than a crying baby on your flight – but running out of power on your iPhone and not having any music to drown said baby out is probably right up there with terrible things that can happen. Make sure you avoid this problem by packing plenty of charge via an extra pod on your next trip.

Hack Seven – Maximise your friendships
If you have mates in foreign cities, then you need to be drawing down on those friendships hard in order to save as much money as possible! If you can sleep on a couch instead of spending money on a hotel then that’s money you can spend on wine and food! Bonus!

I hope that these short tips on saving time and money on your next trip have proven helpful and that you manage to be a thrifty traveler.

The Reolink Altas Security Camera: subtlety, security and clarity in spades

I live in a well-to-do area – one that I grew up in at a time when you didn’t need to lock your door, and the kids could feel safe mucking about in the park till all hours. Today, though, it feels I have to lock all doors whether I’m inside or outside of the home. The suburb itself isn’t high in its crime statistics, however you do get the occasional drunkard passing by, or dodgy looking kids on bikes casing certain houses. Even in Perth’s poshest suburbs there’s reason to boost your home’s security.

So my partner and I hooked up a new security camera that didn’t involve a whole lot of hassle- the Reolink Altas Security Camera and Solar Panel 2.

The Altas security camera is a discreet looking device that’s big on security. Its big 20,000 mAh battery and impressive Solar Panel 2’s 6-watt solar charging makes for a compelling set-and-forget solution for outdoor surveillance. In fact, the Altas boasts up to 540 days of battery life on a single charge, and runs indefinitely with just an hour of sunlight a day.

The camera features 4K capture which is clear as day; pan/tilt coverage; night vision and optional solar power – of course (hence the panel); This jmeans it can be installed pretty much anywhere, even where mains power isn’t available.

As for clarity, the Altas has this in spades, providing sharp 2K video that’s usually enough to capture useful details — faces, licence plates, movement — and its smart motion detection helps reduce false alarms by distinguishing between people, vehicles, and other motion.

Its pre-recording feature captures a few seconds before motion is triggered, and is particularly handy to catch what leads up to an event — often crucial if someone loiters outside before actual motion. With its wireless design and solar charging combined, this means installation is flexible as you don’t need wiring.

The solar panel does need to be wired to the camera though. Still, it means you can pretty much pop this beauty anywhere. We’ve test-driven the product and can vouch that even night vision delivers full-colour clarity in ultra-low light.

Quick, smart and very handsome in design. What more could I want from a security device?

Antonino Tati

The Reolink Altas Security Camera retails for $229, available from reolink.com/au. The solar panel is sold separately but check out their website for options.

Hoyts and IMAX get cosier to draw movie lovers away from their living rooms and back into the cinemas

Occasionally I’ll go to the movies mid-week and discover that I have the entire cinema to myself. Such is the state of movie-going in an age of alternative media proliferation everywhere we turn. Our phones, our TVs, our PCs – all providing countless channels of entertainment viewing.

Still, there’s a sense of comfort and joy in actually going out and seeing a movie, and judging by one particular cinema merger, it looks like there may be a resurgence in movie-going soon…

Hoyts Cinemas has announced a major expansion of its partnership with IMAX Corporation, unveiling plans for 10 new IMAX with Laser locations across Australia and New Zealand. The agreement represents the largest IMAX deal ever in the Australian market and will significantly grow IMAX’s regional presence. Building on a renewed collaboration initiated last year, when four new IMAX sites were announced, this latest development nearly doubles its footprint across the region.

The new state-of-the-art cinemas will feature IMAX’s advanced laser projection and immersive audio technology, offering audiences a premium moviegoing experience.

As for Hoyts, which already commands more than 30 percent of national cinema admissions, the expansion reinforces its leadership in the film distribution industry. The partnership highlights rising consumer demand for high-quality, large-format entertainment and signals continued investment in cutting-edge theatrical experiences.

As my Mum used to sing whenever a ’50s style jingle would cross her mind, “Let’s go to the movies!”

Happy 75th Birthday to the Fender Telecaster: the guitar that stars in hit songs by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Stones, Blur and more

There’s be few guitarists who haven’t heard of the Fender Telecaster – in fact it’s a guitar that is probably on most rockers’ wish lists.

Created in 1950 but first introduced on the commercial market in 1951, this year marks the Fender Telecaster’s 75th anniversary. In celebration, Fender are releasing a series of ‘tribute’ designs in new colours including the American Ultra II Telecaster and the Classic Cabronita Telecaster, available now at au.fender.com.

The Classic Cabronita Telecaster in new red.

The Telecaster was the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitar, designed by its namesake Leo Fender. Originally called the Broadcaster, it quickly evolved into the Telecaster and became a cornerstone of modern music. I has a simple, rugged design but the sounds it makes are as indelible as the artists and bands’ names themselves.

Many legendary musicians have embraced the Telecaster, including Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Page, and Graham Coxon. Indeed, the Telecaster’s versatility has seen it span genres as broad as rock and country to jazz and punk.

There’s a bright, cutting tone to the Telecaster, as a result of its dual single-coil pickups and bolt-on neck construction. This clarity allows it to slice through a song mix effortlessly, making it a favourite for both rhythm and lead playing across decades of music history.

Iconic songs that feature the Fender Telecaster include Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” The Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up,” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.” Known for its versatile “twang,” it was used on The Beatles’ Let It Be sessions and on the song “Killing In The Name” by Rage Against The Machine.

Other classics on which you’ll hear its twangy strings are The Police’s “Message in a Bottle”, Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line”, Pink Floyd’s “Off the Wall”, Red Hot Chili Peppers “Dani California”, Blur’s “Song 2”, and PJ Harvey’s “Missed”.

So, happy birthday to a guitar that has seen more studio sessions, live music gigs, and chart hits than most. And lived to tell the story.

Appreciating the classic portraiture style of Spanish photographer Joan Tous

Barcelona-based photographer Joan Tous is a master in the art of fashion photography. In fact, he graduated from the Institute of Photographic Studies of Catalonia in the early 2000s and soon after followed up with a masters degree in cinematography. You can see a certain rusticity in his work that leans more towards classicism than the pictures you rush-scroll through on Instagram today.

Classicism infiltrates Tous’ fashion work, where tones are muted and the models themselves appear as though they might have stepped out of a Toulouse-Lautrec painting.

For a taste of stylish things to come from this talented lensman, in a world of topsy-turvy weather changes, here’s a story with a nice transeasonal touch.

Jude Law fronts ad campaign for a major legal firm dealing in Ai issues while using mostly Ai software and digitally accumulated data… Confused yet?

Swedish tech company Legora has made a confident entrance into the global Ai scene with a major campaign that features actor Jude Law.

The concept cleverly plays on both Law’s name and persona and tie-ins with the noun ‘law’ itself. Built around the tagline “Law just got more attractive,” the adverts lean into wit, star power, and a subtle reimagining of how legal services can be perceived in a modern, tech-driven world – namely less reliant on dusty rows and rows of client information packed in cobwebbed boxes, and more along the lines of Ai-driven and digitally accumulated information.

Already live across prominent billboards in New York, London, and throughout Scandinavia, the campaign pairs striking visuals with a series of short films. In these, Law steps into a stylised version of a legal role, delivering dense legalese (that’s convoluted legal jargon to you) with his trademark charm and composure.

The effect is deliberately playful, reframing the traditionally rigid image of legal expertise into something more accessible, even charismatic.

Directed by Saturday Night Live veteran Rhys Thomas, the ads carry a light comedic tone without undermining the intelligence of the subject matter. Also working on the project is cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, whose polished, cinematic style elevates the visuals beyond standard commercial fare.

At its core, the campaign is about repositioning. Rather than presenting itself as purely functional or technical, the company embraces storytelling and personality. As for all the serious legal stuff… well, we can leave that up to Ai, really, is the main gist. Or what we got from it, anyway.

The result is a campaign that not only captures attention but also suggests that even the most traditional industries can benefit from a fresh perspective – if not a frightening bot-driven one… in fact, at times it looks like Jude Law himself has been doctored somewhat by them bots…
