Google Fi "opted you in" to data selling - You can opt out of CPNI - Lemmy.world

Received an email from Google Fi that their policy is to “opt you in” to sell your phone-call and purchase info to advertisers. They call the data your CPNI — “Customer Proprietary Network Information”. Making this an opt-out when it’s a combo of your shopping data plus phone-call data (including destination and location) plus Google identity seems pretty egregious to me. Anyway, the emailed notice is easy to overlook as just another policy update that you wouldn’t do anything about. But you can opt out. At https://fi.google.com/account [https://fi.google.com/account], go to “Privacy & security”, and deselect “Allow CPNI sharing”. It’s not in the Fi app; you have to do it in a browser.

The email I got from #Google about #GoogleFi wanting to share federally protected #CPNI data for ads is honestly almost comically awful.

> Google Fi Wireless takes your privacy seriously.
> It’s your right and our duty under federal law to protect the confidentiality of your CPNI.
> From time to time, Fi may wish to provide you with [targeted ads based on your CPNI]
> Starting today, we will opt you into the sharing with and use of your CPNI by Alphabet affiliates to receive this information.

#GoogleFi users!!

#Google "opted you in" to sell your phone-call and purchase info to advertisers via what they call your #CPNI — your "Customer Proprietary Network Information". Their emailed notice is easy to overlook as just another policy update that you have little choice but to accept. You have a choice!

Opt out at https://fi.google.com/account, go to "Privacy & security", and deselect "Allow CPNI sharing".

You have to do it in a browser; they don't let you do it in the Fi app.

Has #Google emailed anyone else to say they want to share your phonecall #metadata with their affiliates for #advertising purposes?

For those on #GoogleFi, #Google has changed their ToS to add that they'll share your #CPNI to parent company Alphabet's other subitaries and affiliates unless you opt out by September 28th. You should also have an email about this by now as well. https://support.google.com/fi/answer/6181037
