With the passing of Billy Bonds earlier today, I have a couple of points to make.
They say that you should never meet your heroes: they are wrong!
I think that Billy Bonds is the greatest player never to represent his country. (I confess to an English bias here, but my point still holds.) Lots of English defenders that were inferior to Billy's skill and professionalism subsequently picked up a few caps because there was a dearth of great players in their era. Billy would have been the first name on the teamsheet if he'd been in his prime twenty years later.
Even in his later thirties, Billy could have given younger players a run for their money.
We lost a gentleman today, and a true legend of the game. Rest in peace, Billy. Oh, captain, my captain.
