Emerging evidence suggests that the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may have long-term deleterious effects on the central nervous system and even contribute to post-COVID neurological syndromes. Interestingly, inflammation-induced proteolytic processing of the Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 leads to the generation of peptides capable of aggregating into amyloid fibrils in vitro. Herein, we investigate the in vitro effect of a fibrillogenic fragment of the Spike protein [Spike 194–203 (S194)] on the aggregation and toxicity of the Parkinson’s disease (PD) protein α-synuclein (αSyn). Our results indicate that S194 fibrils stimulate in a concentration-dependent manner the fibrillation of αSyn monomer, resulting in aggregates with increased capacity of inducing lipid vesicle leakage and toxicity to neuroblastoma cells, in comparison with either αSyn or S194 alone. Bidimensional NMR (1H–15N-HSQC) suggests that S194 fibrils cause a higher perturbation in both the N-terminal region (sequence: 19–68) and the hydrophobic central domain of the αSyn monomer (sequence: 71–95), which is corroborated by protein–peptide docking and molecular dynamics simulations. In contrast with fibrils from wild-type αSyn, aggregates from the PD variant A30P exhibited a remarkable accelerative effect on S194 fibrillation. Similarly, fibrils from amyloid-β peptides, which are linked to Alzheimer’s disease, exhibited a pro-aggregating effect on the S194 monomer. Taken together, these findings might contribute to a broader understanding of the potential connections between SARS-CoV-2 infection and amyloid-related neurodegenerative disorders, highlighting areas that may warrant further investigation.
In #NYC as of March 14, #COVID and #RSV cases are down, and so are #RSVirus emergency department visits as a percentage of all ED visits. #influenza cases and #COVID19 and flu ED visits are slightly up, but it's all within normal fluctuations.
No new COVID deaths were reported, so we're on track for another relatively low-death month.
But #COVIDIsNotOver as long as people are going to hospitals and dying, so I still #WearAMask in elevators, trains, planes, buses, pharmacies and supermarkets!

I would not be surprised if the numbers of COVID-19 deaths were even higher than this new estimate.
"The actual number of US deaths caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection has been investigated and debated since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we use machine learning trained on US death certificates from March 2020 to December 2021 to predict 155,536 (95% uncertainty interval: 150,062 to 161,112) unrecognized COVID-19 deaths. This indicates that 19% more COVID-19 deaths occurred in the US than officially reported. Predicted unrecognized COVID-19 deaths occurred disproportionately among decedents with less than a high school education; decedents identified as Hispanic, American Indian, Alaska Native, Asian, and/or Black; counties with lower household incomes and worse preexisting health; and counties in the South. These findings suggest that the US death investigation system undercounted COVID-19 deaths unevenly, hiding the true extent of inequities."

A new study says the early U.S. COVID-19 death toll is much higher than official counts, and that there were disparities in which deaths were missing from those tallies. About 840,000 deaths were logged in 2020 and 2021. On Wednesday, researchers report in Science Advances that up to 155,000 more COVID-19 deaths went unrecognized. The missing deaths cluster in the first months of the pandemic. The study says Hispanic people faced higher odds of going uncounted. It also points to several Southern and Southwestern states. Researchers link the gap to limited testing and uneven death investigations.
