Finding the ‘will’ to step away from the onslought of information (not to say doom scrolling or subjugation to msm propaganda) and coming back to everyday tasks seems to be the way out of the psychological hell. Where to find that ‘will’ if anger and grief is botteld up without an outlet?

This article may help find a way. In the end, it is all about making a decision (truly making a decision, not a wish). It’s a fine line between staying sane and balanced, keeping informed and switching off from anything but the immediacy of homelife.

Philippa Perry: How to cope with news of war in our social media age

The moussaka and the lasagna in the oven are nearly done.

The moussaka is coming out in moments. The lasagna needs to bake more.

We enjoyed a powerful full moon this week. As fantastic as it was, the last three quarters of a moon have been absolute hell.

Roughly three weeks ago my employer (nearly 4.5k strong) layed off or terminated about 10% of their staff – the company's first layoff in 17 years. Since then I have been picking up the pieces while trying to meet deadlines on two major projects that my teams are responsible for, despite loosing key players on my teams and on adjacent teams that we are dependant on.

I get that this is not exceptional for many, but after more than a decade in state and local government (safe from layoff) I have been with this company for 13+ years. So a disruption like this after a quarter century of stability (with significant advancement opportunities along the way) is unsettling. This paired with the stress of current events (now and in the recent past) is completely overwhelming for me.

These days I find that I am still passionate about doing what's best for my users, but I have struggled to find motivation for the path that we are on as a company. I still believe that we are engaged in positive – as opposed to exploitative – capitalism, but I'm not as confident about the sustainability of recent SaaS products and trends in general. Thankfully, I do believe I still have value to offer, so long as I can keep waking up in the morning and motivate myself to engage.

One of my many objections to capitalism is the reality the profit motive makes no consideration for the people involved. I work for a company that has a history of taking care of their people, but there are obvious limits to available leeway. So I will buckle down and just keep going, because that's the only option I see.

Every time the news blathers on about renaming something after the oaf, my mind copes with images of people around the world pulling down the statues of their imprisoned or dead dictators.
Is this healthy? 🤔

The Fine Line Between Coping and Hiding

You get honest about your coping mechanisms, so which ones actually help and which ones just numb. Most coping mechanisms are just socially acceptable ways to avoid feeling anything. We call it “self-care,” but half the time it’s anesthesia with better branding. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: being left alone works. Talking about shit usually doesn’t. Not for everyone. Not for every problem. But for some of us, silence is medicine and conversation is noise. Solitude clears the […]
