Companies such as Microsoft and Meta have shared the names of civil servants and academics working on European tech regulation with a senate committee investigating “tech censorship” or “jawboning”, news magazine Vrij Nederland reported on Friday. The cabinet has described the news as “extremely worrying”, given that the named officials could now face travel bans or even sanctions, Vrij Nederland said. “If you want to discuss policy, then you do it with us, not over the backs of civil servants,”...

English – The Conversation | After you upload your data to the cloud, where does it go? The challenge of dual-use technologies by Bryn Williams-Jones, Professor of Bioethics and Director of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, École de santé publique, Université de Montréal

AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information.

Most Canadians rely daily on cloud‑based services—email, collaboration tools, banking, streaming and smart‑home apps—many of which are developed, hosted or routed outside the country, exposing our data to foreign governance frameworks and commercial interests. The article explains how this raises pressing questions of who controls the infrastructure, who can access the data, and how it may be used, linking these concerns to the broader challenge of “dual‑use” technologies that are created for beneficial purposes but can be repurposed for harmful or politically sensitive ends. It cites the U.S. CLOUD Act, which obliges American companies to surrender data abroad, and notes similar moves by France to shift public services to domestic platforms, illustrating how dependence on foreign providers can become a national vulnerability. In Canada, pervasive reliance on Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Google and other U.S. firms creates tension between convenience and sovereignty, while responsibility for managing dual‑use risks is fragmented across researchers, institutions and governments. The piece argues that awareness—asking where data is stored, who can access it, and what protections exist—is the first step toward coordinated policies that balance innovation, security and public accountability, ensuring that the control and use of data align with collective Canadian interests.

After you upload your data to the cloud, where does it go? The challenge of dual-use technologies

Data sovereignty is not just a technical issue — it is a collective challenge that all Canadians need to start taking seriously.

If we can have one Liberal MP cross the floor to the #CPC, #NDP, Bloc, or even #GPCanada, or any two break ranks with the Liberals on this one issue, and thereby defeat #BillC22, it is not an overstatement to say that would help preserve the rights of Canadians, the lives of undercover #RCMP officers (who need the haystack of popular usage of the same comms), the safety of abuse victims and survivors, the integrity of Canadian democracy, and the sovereignty of #Canada. #E2EE is truly that important.

Every mandated communications surveillance system gets breached, and every time, it costs lives, destroys investigations, facilitates broad-scale cybercrime, helps abusive stalkers hunt their exes, and gets abused to persecute citizens for nonviolent political dissent, justly necessary whistle-blowing, and even opposition to powerful corporate interests.

For example, the #SaltTyphoon breach in the US spoiled many active investigations and led to the #FBI recommending all citizens and businesses use #Signal, which is also relied upon for international diplomacy, hence for the national security of Canada and our allies. #C22 would force @signalapp to cease operation in Canada.

Speaking of corporate interests: C22 is a not a bill to protect Canadians. It is a bill to subject Canadians to the #Palantir panopticon, and through which, by way of the #CloudAct, to grant the Trump regime access to Canadian's private lives and privileged communications.

Don't let paternalistic patriarchal politics sell out Canadians' security and right to privacy.

Information about you is power over you. The only correct balance is therefore maximum transparency for governments to citizens, and maximum privacy for citizens from governments. Democracies do not rule, nor seek to rule; they represent, and seek to serve.

If C22 is not scrapped, I will vote on this issue.

Microsoft BETRAYS Dutch Officials' Data to US Congress - Europe DITCHES American Tech
