Since more than two weeks the RV Polarstern #SWOS expedition is now conducting research in the western Weddell Sea. The days are starting to get shorter while we are measuring L-band microwave brightness temperatures of sea ice to improve our satellite retrievals for the upcoming EU/ESA #CIMR mission.
Two weeks ago, our colleague Marcus gave an overview of the CIMR L2 Snow depth retrieval implemented within the L2PAD project on the European Space Agency - #ESA #CIMR Expert User Group workshop in Barcelona. Now we are addressing the valuable comments and feedback to improve the product. Another month till the detailed design review, let's go!

I will not be at #LPS25, Europe's largest ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ Earth Observation conference, in Vienna this week.

But many of my good friends and colleagues will, including those from @osi_saf , #CCI (Climate Change Initiative), and #CIMR (the future satellite in my profile banner). Catch many of them at the #SeaIce session, but also #SoilMoisture and #SMOS15 sessions.

Enjoy the conference, while I enjoy some early vacation in Grenoble ๐Ÿ˜….

@lavergnetho My pleasure.
Heard about #CIMR for the first time yesterday from your profile and now Iโ€™m looking forward too ๐Ÿคฉ.
@stephspace Ohh, I hadn't seen that video by ESA! Thanks for sharing. So much looking forward to the deployment video of the #CIMR mission in 2029/30.
This week we are in Copenhagen to discuss the implementation of level 2 algorithms for the upcoming #CIMR โ€“ Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer #satellite. Thank you to #DMI for hosting us and #EU and #ESA for developing #CIMR #CIMRL2PAD

Packing for the next adventure / conference!

#SeaIce #CIMR

not "what on Earth" but "what in Space!" ๐Ÿ˜…

We are developing the prototype ground processor for the #CIMR ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ mission (>= 2029).

All 20+ Polar Oceans products (including #SeaIce variables) and Global Land products (Soil Moisture, Snow, etc...) for the CIMR mission need documenting. Plus the documents to describe file formats, the software architecture, the future validation campaign ๐Ÿ˜‚ , etc...

This is our Year 1 review with ESA, so many of the docs are still draft.

CIMR-L2PAD has one repository available. Follow their code on GitHub.

So next week there is a big #SeaIce #DataAssimilation workshop hosted by the European Space Agency in Frascati (Italy).

I'm one of the organizers, and I'll be there ๐Ÿ™‹ with #CIMR ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ and #CCI content. Who will I meet there?

@lavergnetho
That's exciting! May they be nice to you and offer delicious cookies!
If I may be so bold, I have a few questions wrt satellite use.
Is #Sentinel #CIMR going to be a dedicated satellite or does the device go piggy-back on another?
When new measurement devices are introduced, is it part of the plan to later consolidate satellite use, ie put more and more devices on a single sat where compatible, once the first of their carriers get de-orbited and replaced?
What is the weight & life expectancy of the new CIMR #satellite and what is its decommissioning procedure โ€“ burn up or shoot outside Earth's orbit?

You probably guessed it: my questions relate to #sustainability in general, to space debris, and most of all: the impact of burnt-up satellite material on chemistry and climate.
An institution like #ESA can set the tone so rogue, unregulated actors like #Starlink might soon be reigned-in before their bad biz plan lets 27t of satellite material burn up โ€“ every single day!
