Figbird update: they've been snipping off the top half to two-thirds of ripe African birds eye chillies, and today I find they've started on the jalapeรฑos, the buggers.
I've just collected a bunch of undersized green jalapeรฑos for tonight's pilaf of leftover roast lamb. The buggers won't get those ones now. I mainly collect green birds eyes for my lunch soups, so mostly safe there.
It seems to be opportunistic. They're actually hanging around in the cherry guava tree, waiting for its fruit to ripen. The chillies are in front, and have handy wooden stakes to hang onto while they clip leaves and fruit within easy access. Have not touched the habanero or cayenne fruit yet.
[recalling primary school lesson about traditional bird snares, wondering what figbird tastes like]
