My 18 month old has already experienced that time-honored American tradition - being given a nickname by his peers at his daycare instead of using his full name. I would say it is because it was an Indian name but they did the same to another girl with a more familiar name.

For those outside the US, a nickname at school happens to many kids. I had a teacher try to give me a short nickname - my name is one syllable, dude!
