On the trail of the 2011 mega earthquake

Beneath the waters off Japan’s northeastern coast where two tectonic plates converge, scientists aboard a research vessel are investigating the causes of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and assessing whether they could lead to another massive temblor. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/10/02/japan/science-health/chikyu-drilling-ship/ #japan #sciencehealth #earthquakes #chikyu #311

Over the years, #ScientificDrilling by #TheJR, JAMSTEC's #Chikyu and ECORD's MSP have recovered nearly 500km of cores. It's time to revisit some of these old cores in the archives with new questions and new tools.
At the end of August, the 1st RECORD expedition will visit the Kochi core repository to do just that - expect updates!
