Today, Bob Dunn is basically jazz-handing the debut of Channel 4, the newest member of our podcast network family. It’s the channel for all those conversations that don’t squeeze neatly into Open Web Conversations, Open Makers, or Do the Woo. Think of Channel 4 as the wild card, the “miscellaneous drawer” of podcasts… but in a good way.

Bob Dunn admits he spent way too many late nights obsessing over the name (thanks for nothing, 3 AM brain), but now we finally have a home for those quirky, honest chats, random ideas, and offbeat interviews. If you’ve ever wondered where conversations about business, tech, and… well, just about anything goes. Channel 4 is your answer.

So buckle up—Bette Davis-style—because Open Channels FM is about to get an extra dose of fun, flexibility, and surprises. Catch you in Channel 4, where the sky’s the limit and the ride is definitely bumpy (in the best possible way).

Bob Dunn:
Hey, Bob Dunn here, and guess what? Welcome to Channel 4. You’re probably wondering what Channel 4 is. Now, in the past, I’ve been thinking about this more and more as far as our site. Is our site a network? I kind of went back and forth on that for quite a while and came to the conclusion, yeah, yes, it’s obviously a network. Open Channels FM is a podcast network, which leads me to Channel 4. Now, we currently have 3 channels, as you know, Open Web Conversations, Open Makers, and Do the Woo. What ended up happening is, as I would do production, sometimes when I was just sitting around thinking about things, I think, hmm, You know, what about that catch-all channel? And when you start thinking about that, you think of all these trite names and you think, okay, you know, what, the miscellaneous channel? I mean, it’s pretty weird to actually go through and try to think of something a little bit creative. But this idea kept on bothering me.

I just didn’t know quite where to go with it. Sometimes, like I said, I’m doing production, I do an episode and I think, “Hmm, which channel does this fit under? Is there really a good channel for this one?” And often I just would think, “Oh, no. Well, it could slip in there. Yeah, I can do that.” Other times, maybe I was talking to a host and that idea cropped up of, “Am I actually doing an episode that fits a channel?” well, and I, you know, it always seemed to slip under it. We could nestle it in there somewhere, but it still wasn’t quite right. Now, by adding channel 4, one thing is we have more flexibility for our hosts. They can kind of go in whatever direction they want. It doesn’t always have to feel tied to one of the other channels. So with that, I started taking notes, lots and lots of notes. And again, I would think about it. I’d think about it when I was doing production. I’d think about it at other times. I’d think about it at 3:00 AM in the morning, which basically screwed up my night of sleeping. So, but hey, we all know how that goes.

So I pulled all this stuff together and yes, our friend Claude, it’s always weird to me to say, I think it’s like Claude, a name I wanna call it, the AI thing. But it’s Claude, that’s what I use. So I pulled that all together, started having conversations with Claude, kind of, let’s all organize my thoughts here, ’cause there was a lot of random thoughts. And literally what came up was, this is our fourth channel, so why not call it Channel Four? Which in turn makes me wonder why I spent so many weeks, maybe even months thinking about this, But finally, we hit the nail on the head. Now, think of it this way. Every network needs a fourth channel. Now, ours is where hosts and guests pull up a chair and talk about whatever is worth talking about. It could be business, it could be inside or outside tech. The sky’s the limit. The fact is, the conversation doesn’t fit in our other three channels. It hits in Channel 4. So you can expect interviews, honest conversations, some humor, and ideas that just might stick with you. We already have existing episodes that we recently started, the one I do with Nathan Wrigley, the one I do with Cami McNamara, and we have a couple on the horizon with existing hosts that will fit very nicely in, you know, Channel 4. So as the future goes, I can just take a quote from classic actor Bette Davis, one of her lines from her movie, “Fasten your seatbelt, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” Well, in our case, let’s say a bumpy ride. Hope you join us until the next time.

Clara Mattei is an economist who wants us to rethink the idea that #capitalism is simply the natural order of things.

She is an author and professor of #economics whose work explores how economic ideas become tools of #power, shaping #policy while masking the political decisions beneath.

Her new book, Escape from Capitalism, argues that many of the problems that we see as inevitable - #poverty, #unemployment, #inflation - are built into the system and shored up by models and theories designed to convince us that there is no alternative.
