undefined | Income tax deparment disposes 2.22 lakh appeals in FY26; says CBDT chairman

**The Income Tax Department disposed of 2.22 lakh appeals in FY 2025‑26, a rise of about 29 percent over the previous year.** In a letter to officials, CBDT chairman Ravi Agrawal said the department is using data‑analytics and intelligence‑driven methods to identify risk and guide enforcement. “Theme‑based” investigations were launched to curb incorrect deduction claims and the suppression of business receipts.

**The bulk of the workload came from a special drive that cleared 50,654 legacy appeals out of the 1.51 lakh pending at the start of the year,** cutting the carry‑forward pendency of legacy cases by 33.5 percent. In addition to appeals, the department resolved 72,933 grievances (average resolution time 47 days), processed 1.32 lakh rectification applications and issued 5.68 lakh orders‑giving‑effect (OGEs). Altogether more than 10.26 lakh cases across OGEs, rectifications and grievance redressal were disposed of, reducing outstanding demand by ₹12,33,469 crore.

**Other notable achievements include the digital onboarding of 1.56 lakh trusts, the signing of 219 advance‑pricing agreements—a 25.86 percent increase— and the upcoming rollout of the new Income Tax Act 2025 and Income Tax Rules 2026.** These reforms aim to make tax compliance easier while strengthening a non‑intrusive, data‑driven tax administration.
