Russia initiates WTO dispute regarding EU’s carbon border adjustment and emissions trading

The Russian Federation has requested WTO dispute consultations with the European Union and member states concerning the EU’s “Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) Package” and alleged export subsidy under the EU scheme for trading greenhouse gas emission allowances. The request was circulated to WTO members on 19 May.

Even more ambitious outcomes are within reach. With a robust domestic carbon price and an even greater commitment to #renewables expansion, the country could reach 47 percent renewables and reduce emissions by 44 percent compared to 2023 levels.

This would also help lower upcoming carbon border adjustment mechanism ( #CBAM) payments for EU exports and enable domestic revenues from carbon pricing to be reinvested in grid infrastructure and #cleanenergy deployment. 3/x

Heute früh wurde #Merz in den Radionachrichten zitiert mit "am besten keine Zölle, alles Freihandel". Das scheint mir zu kurz gedacht. Mechanismen wie #CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, #CO2-Grenzausgleich) sind sinnvoll oder sogar notwendig, damit der industrielle Wandel gelingt und wirksamer #Klimaschutz nicht durch CO2-Auslagerung ausgehebelt wird. Europa sollte eine Führungsrolle dabei spielen, um die Industrie zukunftssicher aufzustellen!
