This article highlights a key point: digital transformation requires basic connectivity. With only 38% of the population online, the digital divide in Africa presents significant challenges and opportunities. The competition between space-based solutions and submarine cables is interesting. Despite major infrastructure investments in Africa, China seems to be absent here and worthy of monitoring for geopolitical impact. https://restofworld.org/2026/amazon-starlink-africa/ #WeeklyPick #C4DT #EPFL

Recap of the eID Privacy Hands-on Workshop - C4DT

The Center for Digital Trust hosted a successful workshop on Privacy-Preserving eID last week. We welcomed 14 participants from seven partner organizations including Be-Ys, ELCA, FOITT, Kudelski, SICPA, Swiss Post/SwissSign, and Swisscom. The day-long event combined theoretical foundations with hands-on technical demonstrations. Our focus centered on swiyu, Switzerland’s proposed eID project developed by FOITT, and (...)

Two weights and two measures: if the EU fines Apple and Google over privacy concerns, there is a lot of critizism from the other side of the Atlantic. Now Texas does the same, with even heftier fines, and there seems to be no outcry. Personally I'm all for fining companies who abuse our private data, let's hope that this last fine from Texas encourages the EU to continue their good work in this domain!

Google will pay Texas $1.4B to settle claims the company collected users' data without permission

Google will pay $1.4 billion to Texas to settle claims the company collected data on users without permission. The state’s attorney general announced the settlement Friday. The agreement settles several claims Texas made against the search giant in 2022 related to geolocation, incognito searches and biometric data. The state argued Google was “unlawfully tracking and collecting users’ private data.” Google spokesperson José Castañeda said the agreement settles an array of “old claims,” some of which relate to product policies the company has already changed. Paxton said the $1.4 billion is the largest amount won by any state in a settlement with Google over this type of data-privacy violations.

OK, that took very long, but it finally happened: I have my #C4DT running t-shirt! I think the idea came up first pre-Covid, and constant nagging from my side made it happen!

So if you see me nagging you, don't resist. I'm persistent :)

@neiman @cdengler @ando as far as I know it's working mostly out-of-the box. We had a first semester student project to try to add automatic rooms configured by the LDAP authorizations of the student. But this was more exploratory.

Currently there are at least two instances here at EPFL - the semi-official one, and ours from #C4DT. But C4DT's users will move over to the semi-official one at some point.

#c4dt
