Prima il silenzio, poi la versione che cambia. Kristin Cabot torna sul caso della “kiss cam” dei Coldplay, il video che l’ha esposta pubblicamente e le è costato la carriera, e per la prima volta sposta il baricentro della vicenda: non più solo uno scandalo virale, ma una relazione che, sostiene oggi, sarebbe nata su presupposti falsi.
Ospite del podcast di Oprah Winfrey, l’ex responsabile HR di Astronomer ha raccontato di aver creduto che Andy Byron, allora amministratore delegato dell’azienda, fosse già in fase di separazione dalla moglie quando tra loro è iniziata la frequentazione. Una convinzione che oggi lascia intendere fosse infondata. “Non era la persona che diceva di essere. Per me la menzogna è qualcosa su cui non si può trattare. È mancata completamente l’onestà“.

Anche Cabot, all’epoca, era sposata ma stava divorziando. Proprio questa situazione parallela, almeno così le appariva, avrebbe contribuito a rendere naturale il rapporto. Fino a quel momento, diventato poi virale, in cui i due sono stati ripresi mentre cercavano goffamente di sottrarsi all’inquadratura durante il concerto. Oggi Cabot dice di aver chiuso ogni contatto con Byron già mesi fa, lo scorso autunno. Ma quando le viene chiesto di chiarire nel dettaglio le presunte bugie, si ferma: “Non voglio fare agli altri quello che è stato fatto a me. Il mondo ha già parlato troppo”.
Un passaggio che segna anche una svolta rispetto al passato: nell’intervista rilasciata al New York Times a dicembre, infatti, non aveva mai parlato apertamente di menzogne. Nel racconto c’è spazio anche per una riflessione più ampia sul meccanismo che ha trasformato la vicenda in un caso globale: oltre un miliardo di visualizzazioni per quel video. “Le piattaforme si alimentano del dolore delle persone. Più una storia fa male, più genera profitto”, accusa. Byron, che dopo lo scandalo ha lasciato il suo incarico, per ora non ha replicato.

A guest on Oprah Winfrey’s podcast, the former HR manager of Astronomer recounted believing that Andy Byron, then CEO of the company, was already in the process of divorcing his wife when their relationship began. A conviction that today seems unfounded. “It wasn’t the person they said they were. For me, lying is something you can’t negotiate. She completely lacked honesty.”

Cabot, at the time, was also married but going through a divorce. This parallel situation, at least as she saw it, contributed to making the relationship seem natural. Until that moment, which later went viral, when the two were caught awkwardly trying to avoid the camera during the concert. Today Cabot says she stopped all contact with Byron months ago, last autumn. But when asked to clarify the alleged lies in detail, she stops: “I don’t want to do to others what was done to me. The world has already spoken too much.”

A passage that also marks a turning point compared to the past: in the interview released to the New York Times in December, she had never openly spoken about lies. The account also includes a broader reflection on the mechanism that transformed the case into a global phenomenon: over a billion views for that video. “Platforms feed on people’s pain. The more a story hurts, the more it generates profit,” she accuses. Byron, who left his position after the scandal, has not yet responded.
