Oh joy. Nothing like an early Sunday morning surprise: your website is down, and you realize you forgot about your Buypass certificate’s expiry date. Anyway, a quick ACME client reconfiguration and I’ve switched over to another European provider, ZeroSSL. Problem solved. #SysAdminLife #WebsiteDown #TLS #HTTPS #ACME #Buypass #ZeroSSL #Developer #Fail #SundayMorning

Finally got around to fixing the first of my hosts to get certs from #LetsEncrypt again now that #Buypass is defo 403.

One year after it's acquisition by the dutch company Total Specific Solutions (#TSS), #Buypass terminates it's free #X509 certificate service. Another European alternative to #LetsEncrypt bites the dust. So much for the #EU #sovereignty. https://community.buypass.com/t/y4y130p

In a move that shocked absolutely no one, #Buypass waved goodbye to TLS/SSL certificates because, clearly, who needs #cybersecurity in 2023? 🤷‍♂️🔐 Instead, they're offering a digital stamp—perfect for when your company wants to teleport back to the 19th century. 📜✉️

Discontinues Issuance of TLS/SSL Certificates

Existing TLS/SSL certificates will remain valid and functional until they expire or are revoked. Revocation services, certificate status services (CRL and OCSP), and other necessary support functions will operate as normal for all certificates within their validity period. Notification of the expiry date for existing certificates will be sent as per the standard procedure. More details on how the discontinuation affects certificates ordered in Buypass ID Manager, as well as the discontinuation of PSD2 certificates (SSL QWAC and QC eSeal for PSD2), can be found here: Customers and partners using Buypass ID Manager PSD2 certificates Our offering of ACME-based TLS/SSL certificates will also be discontinued. Background for the Decision There are several factors that together make it no longer commercially viable for Buypass to continue services related to TLS/SSL certificates. The decision is based on a comprehensive assessment of the market situation and the regulatory framework for certificate issuance. The main reasons are: International volume market: The TLS/SSL certificate market is characterised by high competition and large international players. There is significant pressure on prices, customer solution development, and volumes to ensure profitability. Declining revenue: A strong shift from commercial TLS/SSL certificates to free certificates for the majority of volumes has further increased pressure on revenue and profitability. Increasing requirements and investment costs: The regulatory framework in this area is extensive and constantly evolving. This makes it resource-intensive to maintain the service in compliance with current requirements. Enhancing Our ID and Signing Solutions Our other offerings within eID, digital signing, and certificates will continue and be further developed. This includes Employee ID, eID for private individuals, enterprise certificates, and eSeal. We are also strengthening our authentication and signing services, most recently with a new signing solution based on the Cloud Signature Consortium (CSC) model.   Discontinuation Timeline DateActivity01.10.2025Last day to order and renew Buypass PSD2 certificates (SSL QWAC and QC eSeal for PSD2).15.10.2025Last day to order, renew, or replace Buypass TLS/SSL certificates.31.10.2025Last day for issuance of Buypass TLS/SSL and PSD2 certificates.
