The boxing hares – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

In Busy Bee and the Silent Spring all the creatures of Old Oak Meadow are feeling unwell. So to get help some of them start to put on a act when visitors come to walk in the meadow. The two hares pretend to playfully box until they know they are being watched then they stop and slowly crawl away. Very unusual. Will their piece of theatre work? This story is written for the 8-12 year old reader but a number of adults have also enjoyed reading it.

Some teachers thought that there is enough in the story to form the basis for a whole curriculum of outdoor and nature learning and all wrapped up in a story, children will love. The thing they liked best is the multitude of topics covered, all which are such important starting points for vital conversations with young people. The book has also been well received with the Scottish Beekeepers Association putting a copy of it along with the first book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, in their Edinburgh library.

The story is available as an ebook or in printed form globally on different Amazon websites and here are a couple of links https://www.amazon.co.uk/Busy-Silent-Spring-Paul-No%C3%ABl/dp/B088JFN1ZV/ and https://www.amazon.com/Busy-Silent-Spring-Paul-No%C3%ABl/dp/B088JFN1ZV/.

In this illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring, named after Rachel Carson’s ground breaking book, the bees have broken into the village library. They didn’t actually break in because a small window was left open and they went to look up the meaning of the words that they had seen on the containers they found in the dark barn. Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow – about the first Busy Bee book

In Endangered Meadow the bees of Old Oak Meadow have to unite the meadow’s inhabitants to stop some developers building houses all over it. The UK has lost 97% of its meadows since the middle of the 20th century and the madness of the planning system means that councils want to build more little boxes where the only way to get anywhere is through owning a car. An unsustainable model of growth whether those cars are fossil fuel powered or are electric powered. So one clever bee, Beatrice, Bea to her friends, the hardest working bee in the hive, comes up with an ingenious idea of how to save the meadow. Can the bees and the other creatures of Old Oak Meadow save their home?

We need bees for our own selfish survival and through my books I try to show to the younger generation how important they are. The book is available globally via Amazon and two of the links are given below. It’s available in two print versions, a 9″x5″ paperback and A4 format with the large illustrations repeated at the back and also as an ebook. This is one of Alice Wright’s wonderful illustrations.
