The story

In Endangered Meadow the bees of Old Oak Meadow have to unite the meadow’s inhabitants to stop some developers building houses all over it. The adventure starts one day when one clever bee, Beatrice, Bea to her friends, the hardest working bee in the hive, discovers a new sign at the entrance to the meadow. She comes up with an ingenious idea of how to save the home of all the creatures that live there. Will they be successful?

The surgery of Doctor Bee – an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring

This is an illustration from Busy Bee and the Silent Spring. Here, Dr Bee is seen attending to various creatures from the meadow that have started to feel unwell. It’s written for the 8-12 year old reader and features a very special bee call Bea who along with the other bees and the rest of the creatures living in Old Oak Meadow have to stop a farmer using banned pesticides. I remember Rachel Carson’s amazing book and fight against the agrochemical industry the title of which is Silent Spring. I named the book in her honour.

The book was well received by the Scottish Beekeepers Association putting a copy of it along with the first book, Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow, in their Edinburgh library. Buzz of a Party – Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow

Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow is a story about some bees trying to save their meadow from some evil, grasping housing developers. Bea is the hardest working bee in the hive and she comes up with the idea to try and fool the local council that a rare and endangered species lives in the meadow. The developers however are not going to let some bees get in the way of their profit but little do they know that they will be taking on all the creatures of the meadow in a fight to protect their homes.

In the UK we have lost 97% of our meadows since the middle of the 20th century much of them to the obesity of urban sprawl and a planning system unfit for purpose. Some research shows that meadows are very good carbon sinks, perhaps as good as forests. In the UK however, as in many other countries, the countryside has been built over.

The two dubious housing developers arrive to survey the beautiful meadow that they want to build all over. They’re only interested in the money. So what, it’s just another meadow. They don’t realise that Jessica hears them talking about their plans.
