Blankenstein Castle is the ruin of a high medieval hilltop castle in Blankenstein (Hattingen municipality, Ennepe-Ruhr district, North Rhine-Westphalia). It was one of four main castles belonging to the Counts of der Mark.
After gradually falling into disrepair in the 16th and 17th centuries, the complex was rebuilt in the historicist style at the end of the 19th century.

The ruins of the Kaiserswerth Imperial Palace are located on the banks of the Rhine in the Kaiserswerth district of Düsseldorf. It dates back to a monastery founded by the monk Suitbert(us) around 700, but was then expanded into a mighty fortress under Emperor Frederick Barbarossa at the end of the 12th century and later served as a customs fortress.
