Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) significantly revised 2025 employment data downward by 898,000 jobs in the January 2026 report, indicating a much slower labor market than initially reported. Total job gains for 2025 were revised down from 584,000 to 181,000, reducing average monthly gains to just over 15,000.

Despite this, January 2026 saw a surprise gain of 130,000 jobs, exceeding expectations.
