Engineers Weigh Up Returning to #Ancient #RomanConcrete Recipes

"The ancient Romans might have taught us a thing or two about manufacturing #sustainable concrete that lasts for thousands of years.

"A new study has rigorously analyzed the raw materials and energy demands of their ancient recipe, revealing some useful ways to improve modern cement.

"Surprisingly, researchers found that producing Roman mortar and concrete requires more water and more greenhouse gas emissions than #PortlandCement – the most common type of cement used in concrete today.

"But while the initial energy costs may be steeper, Roman concrete formulations could ultimately prove more sustainable in the long run. That's because they may not need to be replaced or repaired as often."

6 #Traditional Architectural solutions that can help us adapt to #ExtremeWeather

- Extreme weather is one of the top two threats facing the world in the next two years, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2023.
- The race is on to make our homes able to withstand the effects of the climate crisis.
- Could these innovations from the past be part of the solution?

"As the climate crisis makes weather increasingly extreme around the world, architects are rediscovering traditional building styles which have proven their ability to withstand today’s harsh conditions

"The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2023 found extreme weather is one of the top two threats facing the world in the next two years. Failure to take sufficient measures to mitigate climate change was rated the most severe risk for the coming decade.

"Here are six examples of innovations from the past which are helping us adapt our living environments to survive in an uncertain climate future."

What traditional buildings can teach architects about #sustainability

"'We wanted to retrieve a sense of heritage, but in a modern way,' [Driss Kettani] said in a phone interview. 'We tried to use the same (energy-efficient) solutions found in the small earthen towns in the south of Morocco – to do with ventilation, the circulation of air and the control of light.'

"Large north-facing windows (and small south-facing ones) reduce the amount of direct sunlight entering the school, while ensuring that classrooms get enough natural light. And the arrangement of the school buildings maximizes the flow of air through the complex, creating a natural cooling system.

"These – and other – vernacular innovations meant that there was no need to install air conditioning at the school, despite the hot North African climate. For Kettani, it was just a matter of common sense."
