L’intensa Jessie Buckley – che aveva già conquistato ogni premio possibile – ha vinto il suo primo Oscar grazie alla sua commovente interpretazione in Hamnet per il ruolo di Agnes, moglie di William Shakespeare, nel film diretto da Chloé Zhao. Buckley, irlandese, aveva già dominato la stagione dei premi prima della cerimonia di domenica, vincendo nella sua categoria ai Critics Choice Awards, ai Golden Globes, ai BAFTA e agli Actor Awards. Hamnet, adattamento dell’omonimo romanzo del 2020, aveva ottenuto otto candidature agli Oscar e Buckley era considerata la favorita per la statuetta come miglior attrice.

Hamnet, adattamento del romanzo storico premiato di Maggie O’Farrell pubblicato nel 2020, racconta la misteriosa vita privata del celebre drammaturgo e poeta Shakespeare e di sua moglie Anne Hathaway (chiamata anche Agnes). La trama ruota attorno alla morte del figlio undicenne della coppia, Hamnet, e al dolore devastante che ne seguì. L’attore irlandese Paul Mescal interpreta William Shakespeare mentre il film immagina un legame tra la tragica morte di Hamnet e la nascita di quella che molti considerano la più grande tragedia di Shakespeare, Amleto.
