Since there's #MARCHintosh #DOScember and #Septandy, the #BSD people should organize to make #FreeBSDuary #NetBSDvember and #OpenBSDober a thing

The realisation 'C' was a failed Fortran compiler explains so much.

"Challenged by McIlroy's feat in reproducing TMG, Thompson decided that Unix—possibly it had not even been named yet—needed a system programming language. After a rapidly scuttled attempt at Fortran, he created instead a language of his own, which he called B."

Did you know that #systemd already has `emailAddress`, `realName`, and `location` fields? but they where never meant for home users, only enterprise workflows, so adding `birthDate field` isn't really much work, and you could see why systemd doesn't consider that bloat

And this is exactly why systemd is bloated because it doesn't consider lots of things to be bloat in the first place

It's never a good idea to rely on software that serves corporations best interests, because corporations care about profit not principles, #FOSS principles.

Choice quote from the so-called "author" of the vibe-coded implementation... very chilling

> We can freely steal each other in a new original way without copyright infringment its totally crazy the amount of code you can steal in just 1h. What took 20 years to Bell labs can now be done in 20 hours straight.

My first #UNIX was AT&T 6ed on a DEC PDP-11/70. But I grew up on 4.2BSD on a VAX-11/780. Subsequently, I hopped to workstations running Ultrix, SunOS, AIX, Mach, etc., all of which owe their existence to Berkeley.

Some years later, in the early 1990s, I played with the 386BSD Jolix and Slackware #Linux—on a PC with floppy drives, naturally. Linux beat BSD, on PC.

Not long after, FreeBSD and NetBSD came out, and I never took a second look at Linux, until Gentoo came out in the early 2000s. I admired the core concept of Gentoo, and I did give my best to learn to like it. But I eventually went back home, to #BSD.

I admit that Linux is more evolved, more refined, more modern. But BSD will always be my “stable” home.

What say you, Doug @dougmerritt, my Berkeley mate?

@pfr

Okay, now we just have to fork it to strip out the systemd.
