OpenAI is in and Anthropic is out as a supplier of AI technology for the US defense department. This news caps a week of bluster by the highest officials in the US government towards some of the wealthiest titans of the big tech industry, and the overhanging specter of the existential risks posed by a new technology powerful enough that the Pentagon claims it is essential to national security. At issue is Anthropic’s insistence that the US Department of Defense (DoD) could not use its models to facilitate “mass surveillance” or “fully autonomous weapons,” provisions the defense secretary Pete Hegseth ...
The goal of security systems is the most security for the least amount of trade-offs. The way to do that is to make the party who is best able to mitigate the risk responsible for the risk.

Harvard Gazette: What if we used AI to strengthen democracy?. “‘We talk about AI being used as a tool of surveillance, as a tool of control, as a tool of propaganda,’ said security technologist Bruce Schneier, co-author of the new book ‘Rewiring Democracy: How AI Will Transform Our Politics, Government, and Citizenship.’ ‘These are all possible scenarios, but AI can also be used to resist all […]
https://rbfirehose.com/2026/01/29/harvard-gazette-what-if-we-used-ai-to-strengthen-democracy/Great post by the security expert Bruce Schneier:
https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2025/12/building-trustworthy-ai-agents.html
He proposes an independent, secure data storage for my personal data that AIs can access in a well-defined, secure, auditable manner, instead of just handing over my most personal info (that an agentic AI assistant needs to take over tasks for me well) to the large LLM providers for them to integrate into their AIs in any way they choose.
Unfortunately this is unlikely to ever happen. It’s not in the interest of Google, OpenAI and the others.
The promise of personal AI assistants rests on a dangerous assumption: that we can trust systems we haven’t made trustworthy. We can’t. And today’s versions are failing us in predictable ways: pushing us to do things against our own best interests, gaslighting us with doubt about things we are or that we know, and being unable to distinguish between who we are and who we have been. They struggle with incomplete, inaccurate, and partial context: with no standard way to move toward accuracy, no mechanism to correct sources of error, and no accountability when wrong information leads to bad decisions...

🚨 Autonomous AI is hacking at machine speed — and it’s just starting.
AI agents now rival elite hackers: automating full attack chains in real time.
Malware writes itself. Ransomware iterates. Barriers to entry vanish.
But AI can also defend. Bruce Schneier outlines the path to self-healing systems.
