MikeDunnAuthorToday in Labor History December 10, 1907: The worst night of the Brown Dog riots in London, when 1,000 medical students clashed with animal rights protesters and cops. They had been protesting against a memorial for animals that had been vivisected that animal rights activists had erected. The Brown Dog affair raged for 7 years, from 1903 to 1910. Swedish feminists infiltrated the University of London lectures. There were pitched battles between medical students and the police. The authorities ordered the cops to protect a statue of a dog from irate medical students, known as “anti-doggers.” It led to a Royal Commission to investigate the use of animals in experiments. And, overall, it was a cause célèbre that divided the country.

I’m interested in learning and listening, and am grateful for the folks who have challenged me on some previous problematic beliefs (and the ones I’m currently working through). I’m working through some of the biases and misunderstandings and doing the work of unlearning. Currently working through some essential reading in Indigeniety. I believe in punching up vs. Punching down, in calling others in and being called in, and that there are times I need to learn to sit down and listen to/amplify the voices of those who are affected by issues on which I have opinions.
On the fun side, I bake a lot, and plan on making a few thousand cookies over a week or so in December (follow me under the hashtag #BigBake2022 ). I have a purebred #BrownDog (by which I mean I have absolutely no idea of her breed, but it’s fun to guess!), and have recently gotten back into swimming and am working on endurance and speed this year. I also really love memes on research, baking, sewing, and sexuality/sexual health.
