The UK government needs to stand up, not suck up, to Trump.

Although I know it's all an attempt to distract attention from the Epstein files and unpopular measures in general, I watched some of Donald Trump's sick racist fantasy video.

That repugnant spectacle prompted me to think again about US-UK relations.

The UK, as a country with pretensions to democracy and decency, must develop a long term strategy for freeing itself from its dependency on the USA.

It's not just the video, or the tariffs, or the arbitrary arrests, or the erosion of free speech, or the international bullying, or the facilitation of environmental destruction, or the boost to corporate power and oligarchy...it's not just Donald Trump the individual -- it's the political system that has allowed such an individual to rise to power in the first place.

As I've said before, I don't want this call for disentanglement to be confused with a visceral hatred of all things American, but we've got to think about defence, security, and the UK's international relations in the long term and work out how to unshackle ourselves from this system.

Easier said than done of course, but it never will be done if we do not first admit that it must be done.

I need time to reflect on the US election , but this Brit does hope that Martin Kettle is not being unduly optimistic in the extract below.

>>There is one small possible consolation from Trump’s lamentable re-election: the event is so shocking that it may finally help to nudge the British into seeing Americans as different and ourselves as we really are, no longer reliant on the crutch of the supposed special relationship.<<

The shocking US election result will create a new world order – and launch a fresh wave of Trump wannabes

A whole raft of tired assumptions collapsed today. Britain must be realistic about America now – and our so-called ‘special’ relationship, says Guardian columnist Martin Kettle
