@BenHigbie You're right, it WAS Phill Rizzuto! But Joe DiMaggio did something...for Mr Coffee machines, definitely, and probably something else.
Carvel's is still around, but there aren't as many as there used to be. There was one near us, but it was an "Express" location; not at all like the old stores. Of course the ice cream cakes are still sold in supermarkets, but the prices are fairly scandalous now.
It reminds me of Brigham's ice cream in New England. The stores were wonderful, but eventually they were acquired by some heartless bunch of venture capitalists and run into the ground. Now the stores are all gone, and all that remains are prepackaged quarts sold in stores. They're nothing like the wonderful ice cream that they used to sell in the stores.
Not to mention the food! I loved their burgers, hot dogs, and fries. And they served a pea soup that was so thick I could stand a FORK up in it. It was the best!
